Obsession And Necessity In Shakespeare's Romeo And Juliet

How does Shakespeare demonstrate how dangerous obsession and desperation is? He demonstrates this in many ways with his characters and their actions towards one another. The other question is how does he contrast this with real love? He also explains this in his play Romeo and Juliet.
One way Shakespeare shows how dangerous obsession and desperation is between the two main characters Romeo and Juliet. Romeo is so desperate to find someone to love for their beauty and not their personality. He becomes obsessed with Rosaline and how beautiful she is and how he won’t be able to be with her because she has pledged herself to God. But Romeo thinks “Well, in that hit you miss. She 'll not be hit With Cupid 's arrow. She hath Dian 's wit, And, in

He shows how people in the play show love in different ways. At first he shows how Romeo thinks he’s in love with Rosaline “Benvolio: What sadness lengthens Romeo 's hours? Romeo: Not having that, which, having, makes them short. Benvolio: In love? Romeo: Out— Benvolio: Of love? Romeo: Out of her favor, where I am in love.” (1.1.168-173). Romeo whines to Benvolio about how his life is over because there is no one as beautiful as Rosaline. He is in love with beauty not Rosaline herself. Another way demonstrates love in the play is when Juliet meets Romeo she is not very interested in him but then they talk and she falls in love with him. “Juliet: My only love sprung from my only hate! Too early seen unknown, and known too late! Prodigious birth of love it is to me that I must love a loathèd enemy.” (1.5.152-155). This demonstrates that Juliet is actually trying to find true love whereas Romeo just wants a girl. Friar Lawrence tells Romeo that he only has a small crush on Juliet that he would be crazy to marry her after only 1 day (not even a day). He says to Romeo “Holy Saint Francis, what a change is here! Is Rosaline, whom thou didst love so dear, So soon forsaken? Young men 's love then lies Not truly in their hearts, but in their eyes. “(2.2.69-72). This shows that Shakespeare shows how many different types of “love” there

Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet combines the two, having tragedy be a result of love. In the play a central theme is love and its effect on those involved. Ironically, the main source of strife in the play is love, instead of being a solution, love is the cause of brawls and deaths. Throughout the play, Shakespeare explores love as a source of conflict whether, brotherly, familial, or romantic.…
