Essay On Child Observation

After reading this article, I learned different ways to observe students than just through observation records. While different types of observations are important, it is extremely important to get to the main root of the child, their parents. Teacher’s need to have a relationship with not only the children in their class, but also the parents. Communication allows everyone to work together to solve problems and help the child grow developmentally. In the article, it talks about how the teachers need methods for asking the parents questions. It’s almost like an observation for the parents! By sending the parents a couple questions to answer about their child, this allows the teacher to communicate, prepare for conferences, and learn along …show more content…
I like to include the parents as much as possible. One craft that we did to decorate our classroom was creating house shaped picture frames out of Popsicle sticks. We then asked the families to bring in a family portrait to put inside of it. These pictures are on the classroom wall. It allows the parents to feel welcomed and the children to feel secure. Another activity that I like to do is planting seeds. We bring in packages of seeds and have the children pick which ones they want. We pot and plant them, then send them home to grow. This allows the parent and child to have a learning experience together. Once the plant grows, they bring it back in for the rest of the class to see and hear about the process. After all of the plants have returned to the classroom, we decorate the room and invite the parents to enjoy a picnic lunch with the class! Another technique is of course conferences. Every parent has a scheduled time to sit down with the teacher. The last technique that I use is just daily conversation with each family. I like to find a few minutes to greet and discuss with every parent that walks in the door. Sometimes the conversation is more in depth than others tend to be. However, communication is the best technique to have. Always find time to at least highlight something that the children has done! I am so excited to try the new technique of sending questions home with the parents. I really think this will open some of the parents up a little more and allow them to feel more

During my time in various classrooms, I experienced teaching, lesson planning, and classroom management skills, but never interacted with parents. Similar to many first year teachers, I lack skills to efficiently communicate with parents. Often, education courses are so focused on the art of teaching they forget about other important job essentials. In fact, after realizing that parental interaction is an essential job duty, I worried about how to proactively interact with parents. I strive to be an effective teacher but evidently cannot do so without parental…

Parents are important like the students. It is important that parents are being encouraged and being more involved with the school and their child’s education. Parent involvement decreases when the student gets older. However, it is not to late. No matter how old the student may be, it is important that we get the parents together and get them involved. It is possible for parents to be motivated and schools can encourage them. “Schools can increase the involvement of parents in many ways, including things like participation on committees, attendance at special days and events, taking part in programs, and helping out with events such as excursions and fetes” (Raising Children Network, 2014). It is the schools duty to keep the parents in the loop on things. If parents are not…

Some students were building a tower with blocks and after the teacher called him over to bring a toy, he used his hand to knock down all the foam blocks, the teacher reprimanded him, then he came back and started to used both of his hands to pick up large blocks in order to rebuild using the large foam blocks. He started playing with this ring toy where he stabilized the base and used the fingers of his other hands (finger and thumb) to remove the rings, which could be seen as building early. (Building middle at times as he was eating a cookie during snack time and was holding the cookie with his right hand while banging the table with his left hand.) I noticed the child using one hand to hold on the paper he was coloring, and then using the color with the other hand to make scribbles. The color was like a combination of a color pencil as well as crayon. He seemed to be able to hold the color but then he would seem to have trouble keeping it straight.…

This child study was completed in conjunction with EDUC 808: The Study of Normal and Exceptional Children Through Observation and Recording at Bank Street College of Education. The course began with the selection of a study child. I decided to work with Libby, a student in the second grade class in which I am an assistant teacher. I selected Libby as my study child because I have found that it was harder to get to know her on a personal level, as compared with other children in the class. I wanted to get to know Libby better and this was an ideal opportunity.…
