Along the area where the shading transitions from light to shadow there is the core shadow, the darker plane on the right side of the drawing which defines the edge of the shadow. The water itself reflects back enough light to create a visual difference in value. In the light zone of this drawing, the halftone, the building are significantly hit by the light from the horizon. Most of the drawing on this canvas includes the light and the dark halftones, the light, and the highlights. In the drawing the thin veil of clouds that climbs over the city and covers the sky, diffuses the sunlight and causes the rays coming from the horizon to be indirect. As a result the sky appears light grey or white. It gives a soft overall illumination over the city that lightens the buildings below it. This soft indirect light causes the transition from light to shadow to be more gradual and more subtle. This becomes even more apparent considering the artist created this in real time, meaning the constant change in lighting may have altered his work on more than one
