Observation Of The Behavior Of Childhood

Improved Essays
Our human lifespan is divided into many different stages. As one enters a new stage,

his behavior will tend to change due to cognitive and motor development. In this study

we will be focusing on the “magic years”(Shelov & Altmann, 2015), ages 3-4.

Observation of the behavior of 4 year old Lizzie, and 3 year old Braxton has already

taken place. Their behavior varies because Braxton is deaf and his language skills are

used through signing rather than speech, but there is still much development that takes

place at this stage that has been observed.

Once children reach the preschool ages of 3 and 4 years, they have already begun

to lose their “baby fat”. Lizzie and Braxton are both tall for their ages and their weight

corresponds with their height.

Although Braxton is deaf,

he can understand up to 1000 signs according to his Aunt Ashley. Lizzie was rather

quiet and shy, but responded in sentences when spoken to.

Little emotion was shown throughout the observation besides one circumstance in

which Braxton messed up Lizzie’s play-doh. Lizzie at first became frustrated and a little

upset, but forgave Braxton once he gave her a hug to apologize.

THE BEHAVIOR OF CHILDREN AGES 3-4 4

Once the children warmed up, they adapted and interacted well with the other

students in the classroom. Braxton seemed to have a gender preference towards

males, while Lizzie didn’t seem to have any preference towards males or females.

Through this observation, it was shown that both children are developed well

cognitively and in motor skills. If placed in a different setting with more children, their

behavior would have most likely differed. But because they were placed in a setting with

college students, it showed how well they adapted to playing with young adults in a

classroom setting with

Piaget studied cognitive development among children to comprehend the existing relationship between mental processes and social behavior (Gould, 2015). He used the sensorimotor as the prime stages to justify the infant’s cognitive development. The sensorimotor stage has six sub-stages: a) simple reflexes ranges from birth to one month old; this stage reflects rooting and sucking. b) Primary circular reaction ranges from one to four months old; hence he learns to coordinate sensations; he accidently repeat or imitate happenings; for example: unconsciously sucking thumbs. c) Secondary circular reactions ranges from four to eight months: the child becomes aware of what surpasses his body and interest more about objects surrounding him.…

But the sad part of this anticipation is wishing past every stage of their development to see the adult they will become. I started off my observation, at a daycare and the first room I was able to go to was in the infant and toddler room. The age from one to three is the toddler years, which is very exciting and challenging for parents and caretakers. The language and interpersonal skills are being developed rapidly during this stage along with the motor, cognitive and physical developments. There are changes that can be noticed in the toddler such as the gaining of independence and struggling with separation. (Sensening, A., 2016)…

Albert Bandura “Social Learning Theory” The theory I chose was the “Social Learning Theory” by Psychologist Albert Bandura. In his theory Albert Bandura believed that children learn best from observing the behaviors of those around them, and imitating what they’ve learned “Children do not always need reinforcement or punishments to shape behaviors, sometimes they act in imitation of the behaviors that they observe around them” (Cook and Cook, pg12). To prove his theory Bandura, created an experiment known as the “Bobo doll” experiment.…

The classroom that I was assigned to had a total of twelve children that all ranged from the ages of four to five years old. Specifically, the classroom had five female students and seven male students. Upon arrival, the teacher introduced me to the children and explained to them that I was a guest from Fresno State University and would be observing them. Children’s growth around this age is much slower but also steadier than it was in early childhood, averaging about 2 inches and 5 pounds every year (Berger, 2016, p. 240). Although I wasn’t sure of the other children’s ages making it so I couldn’t compare, Kylie seemed to be both a healthy weight and height for her age, as she did not appear overweight or too short. Childhood obesity is becoming an increasing problem in the United States with about 18 percent of 6- to 11-year-olds suffering from it; however, it was good to see Kylie was a healthy weight. At this age, the body becomes even more proportional, allowing for the mastery of more complex motor skills. As expected, Kylie was very well developed in her motor skills and used many different…

I completed my infant observation at the University Child Development Center. The University Child Development Center specializes in childcare for infants all the way up to children age 12. The infant I observed was about eight months of age and was placed in a classroom that usually has a relatively small number of infants for better one on one attention. As I completed my observation, I observed all five developmental domains which include physical, emotional and social, cognitive, adaptive, and language and communication.…
