Observation Of Mrs. Grier's Preschool Classroom

From the moment Mrs. Grier’s preschool room is entered on February 19th the theme is evident. The reading nook is filled with presidential books (some borrowed from the library), the math center is money themed and the walls are adorned with Abraham Lincoln wall cabins. Students file in as normal, moving their pictures from the “home” board to the “school” board, putting away their belongings, and then sitting down for breakfast. When the timer rings and their spaces are cleared they meet at the rug for circle time. A ballot box is brought out- it is a reoccurring activity throughout the week. Voting begins on cats or dogs, the politicians in the class are ready to help sway the more hesitant voters, and the dogs win a close victory. Mrs. …show more content…
It seems basic but the design is ingenious and the novelty is not lost to the kids. George Washington was taught earlier in the week and they are quick to add details like gold buttons to his “military uniform”. The lesson plan is cohesive and no part of the days schedule has been overlooked. It’s clear the students are absorbing the material and utilizing it in different areas. The centers around the classroom include cash registers, penny rubbing, Lincoln logs, and abcmouse.com money activities. They learn the pledge of Allegiance and God Bless America. At the end of the day they even voted on their favorite American (Obama won). In reflection there is nothing that could have been changed or improved. Mrs. Grier had thought of every detail down to the transitional songs and activities. Every moment of the day was filled with something to do and any potential discipline issues were tactfully handled. Every day as the students wait for the bus she reflects with them on their day’s activities. She encourages them to share this information with their parent’s.
