On October 10, 2017, I went in Mrs. Fetzer’s first-grade classroom. While in the class I observed a small group math lesson for approximately twenty minutes. At the beginning of the lesson the teacher introduced the lesson by asking the students about the previous day’s lesson. She was referring to the subject of adding and subtracting word problems the student’s completed the day before, but did not complete. The group began by starting with the next problem on the worksheet. The teacher asked the students to follow along with their finger as she read the word problem aloud. Once she finished reading the word the problem, the teacher asked, “What operation is the word problem asking us to preform?” The students would response with addition

For session 2, we did a basic facts assessment over number recognition with our client (flash cards). We decided to do the basic facts assessment over number recognition because that is the prerequisite for addition/subtraction and that is what our client currently learning about. Our client did really well with the basic facts, so for the next session we decided to move onto addition and subtraction. Session 3 is where we finally discovered some gaps that our client has. She had some trouble with subtraction: single/double digit and word problems.…

The class began Math with a “Math Mountain” in which students have set problems to solve on the screen and students solve a new set every day. Mrs. Torrent had a lot of manipulatives on hand in which helped students visually comprehend what was going on. Students were encouraged to work with one another in content as they shard some of these manipulatives and students looked engaged and entertained with this. At the end of the math section, the students did 15 minutes of math centers in where students worked together in stations on certain things. One station had addition while another station had fractions.…

On Monday February 22, 2016 Mrs. Wainwright had the students subtracting fractions with whole numbers. The problems had the same denominator, for example, 7 wholes and 3/10 subtract 2 wholes and 1/10. She would put a problem on the board, and when the students were done she would check them. The students are in groups, like Monday, Tuesday, etc, so if all the students on the same row got the answer right she would give their group points.…

In this process, the student first solves the problem and verbalizes the processes used, then writes he step-by-step process and identifies it on the model.” (Miles and Forchs, p. 6). While the teacher is helping the student along, he or she can monitor what areas the student might be struggling with. If the teacher is instructing a large classroom, this strategy might be better done in small groups. There is considerable evidence to indicate a that verbalizing upper level math problems has a pos6itive impact.…

Once the teacher introduced me they all greeted me with “Good Morning, Mrs. Tatiana.” I felt the teacher had good classroom management that brought good manners. Throughout my observation time spent at Reese Elementary, I have had the opportunity to observe two teachers, Mrs. Church, who is a second-grade teacher, and Mr. Dohrmann, who is a fifth-grade teacher. The teachers teach different grade levels and have very different teaching styles which lead to differences in classroom management and assessment, as well as, other categories. Even though there are many differences between Mrs. Church and Mr. Dohrmann they also have many similarities, such as the way they handle discipline and motivation. During my observation hours in both classrooms, I noticed the classroom management procedures that both teachers use. Both teachers have a class schedule they go by to keep the students and themselves on task throughout the day.…

Students file in as normal, moving their pictures from the “home” board to the “school” board, putting away their belongings, and then sitting down for breakfast. When the timer rings and their spaces are cleared they meet at the rug for circle time. A ballot box is brought out-…
