Observation Of Literacy In The Classroom

Decent Essays
The child that I chose to observe turned out to be the most interested in literacy out of the entire class. This four year old girl came into classroom and was offered the option of joining the carpet where the boys were playing with blocks. She did not want to join the boys on the carpet to play with blocks, instead she was given the idea from Ms. Christy to bring a book over for her to read. The child ran over to the book shelf to pick out a book. You could tell she was happy to do this. At other points during the day she was the only one who was sitting at the writing center when their was not enough room at the centers. She had the option of playing with anything in the room in the mean time, but she chose to to sit at the writing center tracing letters. You could tell she had a love for literacy …show more content…
I could tell needed this time to take it all in before she interacted with doing the same motions as everyone else. This occurred during the germ song and The Story of Jack and The Beanstalk. What was very helpful and reassuring for me that this child is very involved with literacy was at one point during my observing the teacher Ms. Christy was in the observation booth to observe her class and intern. She was able to give me more information about this child’s literacy involvement and skills. What she had told me is that she reads to the dolls, reenacts situations, uses puppetry as a form of literacy and is working on writing her name. The child is able to write the beginning and end letters of her name. Its is taking time for her to memorize it and write the entire thing since it is not a short name. It is great that her classroom is a print rich environment and supports her love for books and writing. Something that amazes me is her desire to use literacy as play, instead of going over to the blocks for

Literacy knowledge can be assessed in a number of different ways. One way to assess literacy is through child interviews. Child interviews are good assessment tools for several reasons. First, they are good to use when a child just develops literacy skills. Another reason child interviews are good to use when assessing youngsters is because oftentimes, younger children cannot use regular “paper-and-pencil tests” to express themselves (Beaty, 2015, p. 14).…

One of the main literacy sponsors growing up was my mom. She was a three grade teacher until I was born. As I grew up she made sure I was reading a book and not wasting all my time watching tv. When I was still learning how to read chapter books my mom would sit on the couch with me and read for at least forty minutes every day so that I grew my read and vocabulary skills. On car rides, weather it was long or short, or if I was just sitting at the baseball field watching my brother play she always made me bring a book with me.…

If I can help just one child, I feel an irresistible sense of accomplishment; and as a teacher I will have the opportunity to help many children. To succeed as a teacher, I need each one of my students to succeed. This year I have the honor of spending my days with 24 five year just starting their literacy journey. The undertaking is a daunting task (thankfully I have an amazing classroom teacher leading the way), the standards in place for kindergarten students are high. Finding a balance between strategies that distill a text into identifying letters and producing letter sounds, and allowing the students to find delight in a book of their own choice is imperative. I am humbled daily by their fortitude and willingness to participate in the tasks necessary to become lifelong readers and writers. The pendulum swings between excitement and frustration during our ELA lessons, which leads me to reflect on my own literacy experiences, and wonder and hope that I can give them what they need.…

Introduction Early literacy experiences are crucial to a young child’s literacy and language development (Brown, 2014). Children who are given the opportunity to develop the foundational skills in language and literacy in preschool, are better prepared to learn to read and write in kindergarten, and enjoy more academic success later in life (Brown, 2014). When given the opportunity to engage in purposeful and meaningful language, children can develop a strong literacy and reading development foundation (Brown, 2014). The development of language, literacy, and reading require several foundational skills which become more proficient and complex as skills are mastered (Brown, 2014). Educators must be knowledgeable of the developmental process…

My journey with literacy has been a part of my life and began before I even entered school. During my early days you would say I was a “repeater”. My parents always sat down and read to me.…

As a new teacher, it is always helpful to talk with other teachers to see what their classrooms look like, this way I can get an idea of the rights and wrongs for classroom instruction, behavior management, etc. The teacher I interviewed has been teaching for 5 years so she is a fairly new teacher, but everything that she said I could connect with. Her ideas and values in teaching seemed almost similar to my own. This interview let me see the teacher’s philosophy of teaching and break it down into individual parts. After reviewing her answers, it is easy to see that this teacher uses a constructivist approach when teaching literacy.…

I can empathize with teachers who say that the observation and evaluation process does not seem reciprocal in nature. Most of my follow-up evaluations have either been waived or conducted in five minutes or less in which the principal hits upon the highlights of my observation. Very few teaching lessons have been learned through these interactions. In her article though, Shelly Arneson includes sound practices that can be implemented to alleviate many of the concerns of the evaluation process. Her basic premise is to shift the dialogue from inspection-based conversation to a reflection-based conversation.…

When reflecting on our readings and class discussions, four ideas have made the most impact on me as an educator. First, my idea that education as a privilege has been challenged. Second, our practices and our personal beliefs as teachers have a great impact on the social identities of our students, not only in the classroom but long after they leave us and enter into the workforce. I have learned to become aware of all the different ways people in the word are literate, regardless of their reading and writing skills. Finally, I have begun to think about how I can make my classroom more reflective of the worlds that my students come to me from to help them see themselves as readers and writers.…
