Observation Of Laertes In William Shakespeare's Play

One element that I did not like from the Hamlet performance was the time period the director had chosen to stage it in. I expected the actors to recite the Hamlet play-text in a modernized way since the time period was set in the 1950s; it only made my ability to comprehend the actor’s dialogue more complicated and confused. The second element I did not like from the Hamlet performance was the role change of Laertes from Morgan C. Hall to Rex Glover. I was really looking forward to watching a girl being cast as Laertes since it was mentioned in my TH 114 class. The director’s motive for casting a female Laertes was to present Laertes as a big sister rather than a big brother to Ophelia, along with the idea of Laertes and Hamlet having a past relationship together. Laertes would have cautioned Ophelia of Hamlet being a low-down dirty dog who does not really love her; that Hamlet was only in searched of pleasure instead of love. …show more content…
I would have found the scenes between them more believable to buy into and more interesting to watch, but since Laertes was presented as a male instead of a female on October 4, which was the day I attended the production of Hamlet, it made times in the play confusing and less entertaining. One element I did like about the production of Hamlet was the portrayal of the late King Hamlet. I found it very creepy rather than scary, but it was still good. His all-white appearance was good, however, his eyes were not all-black. It was mention is my TH 114 class that the guy, David Trump, playing the ghost of the late King Hamlet may have all black eyes during the live production, but he did not. I was looking forward to witnessing an aspect similar to the American Horror Story: Asylum

Although it seems like Hamlet loved Ophelia in the beginning of the play, as the play progressed certain scenes, such as the “get thee to a nunnery” scene, makes the reader doubt whether or not he truly loves Ophelia or if it was all just lust. The lines above put all the doubts to rest because it verifies how immensely Hamlet loved Ophelia. During this scene in the play, Ophelia has died and Hamlet competing with Laertes over who loves her more, which can be seen when Hamlet says “ show me what thou't do”. Then, Hamlet goes to ask Laertes whether he would weep, fight, fast, tear himself apart, drink vinegar, and eat a crocodile for Ophelia. Following those questions, Hamlet says that he would do all that for her which shows how much he loved her and how much he was devoted to her.…

Laertes, as Ophelia, has just lost a father and in his despair he has sworn revenge, but at seeing his sister, his anger intensifies as he states “Hadst thou thy wits, and didst persuade revenge, It could not move thus” (IV.v.169-170). Her insanity leaves her looking like someone who is in need of protection and inspires sympathy and pity from others. Laertes’ unwillingness to face his guilt of not being there for his sister transfigures into blaming others for her insanity. Even after her insanity has driven her to death, Ophelia still has an effect on the ones she left behind. She is the factor that leads to a confrontation between Hamlet and Laertes of who loved her the most even though both of them were contributors of her descent into madness.…

I don’t believe that any of the characters in the play of Hamlet fall into any kind of stereotype.
