Observation Of Dance

For my dance report, I saw the Fall Dance at Adelphi University on December 4, 2016. It was called “Aszure Barton.” The two pieces that really stood out to me were “Tarantella” and “Consumed.” They both displayed great amounts of emotion through their choreography, backdrop, costumes, colors, music, and lighting. “Tarantella” and ‘Consumed” gave off opposite moods because of their specific components.
“Tarantella” from August Bournonville’s Napoli was a very lively and cheerful dance. It can be considered a dramatic dance because it tells the story of a wedding feast being celebrated. Some people were dancing with a partner while the others clapped along with to beat of the music. It was evident in the props used and the costumes worn that

Through the choreography and music, you can sense the depression radiating off of the dancers. The blue backdrop represents sadness and the lyrical music, although in a different language, was very slow and gloomy. Later on in the piece, the background switches to black, representing the title. The dancers were “consumed” with depression. They were overpowered by depression’s ability to take over people. The stage itself was also very dark. These colors (dark blues, black) are the colors that you would associate with sadness. The choreography of the dance consisted mostly of long movements and contractions, which caused the mood of the dance to be slow and gloomy. These floor movements contributed to the feeling of sadness in this dance because they were slow and quiet movements. They helped with the enjoyment and understanding of the piece. While performing these movements, the dancers looked as though they were searching for something that they were unable to find. They could have been looking for just one shred of happiness in their lives. The dancers also had blank expressions on their faces. They looked as though they were falling into misery and depression. Their costumes add to this mood. The girls wore long, dark purple dresses that went all the way to their ankles and the boys wore dark pants that also went down to the ankle. Both the girls and boys were barefoot throughout the piece. All these components caused the audience to feel sad and unhappy. You could tell the dancers were relating to one another. At some points of the dance, a dancer would begin to fall, but other dancers would catch him/her. This represented that the dancers had each other’s backs and cared about each other. To get the same feeling across to the audience, I perhaps would have added darker costumes and a black veil to show true depression. The part of this

In the beginning and at the end they played some old Italian type music as the dancers moved as one person and this gave the impression of a sort of warm family vibe throughout this section. There was also an instance of an extremely loud and almost uncomfortable sound during a portion in the middle which allowed the mood of the audience to switch to disturbed or uneasy, which was simultaneously reflected in their dancing and movements on and off the main “dancing portion” of the stage. A powerful instance which occurred a couple times was when the music shut off completely and there was only the audiences breathing, and the heavy panting of the dancers that could be heard throughout the theatre. This clearly intentional choice not only made the concept intriguing, but it allowed the audience to a feel a level of connect and grounding with the dancers as well. Much of the music reflected the different colour changes on screen as it was more serene during the cloud projection, but it was fast and very loud when the screen went to red.…

The dancer wears black because in this section black is symbolic for pessimistic and overall reflects the negative side of the reality. The choreography in this part is a lot more expressive than the walking on sunshine dance. I have used the song ‘Hold Your Head Up’ by Macklemore. This song represents that even if you’re struggling you are able to push through and keep strong. As for camera transitions, I have used straight cuts in order to keep the viewer’s attention on the continuing story without any…

The Kinesis dance performance that I decided to analyze was Last Dance. The dance was choreographed by Amanda Steiner, and the music that was used was “Love in the Dark” by Adel. Besides being the choreographer, Amanda was always one of the two dancers. The form of the dance was a narrative, with Amanda as a wife and the second dancer, Christian Vidaure, as her husband. The idea of Last Dance was about how love sometimes changes, and how those changes lead to drifting apart.…

Recalling from “Harrison Bergeron”, “They were burdened with sashweights and bags of birdshot, and their faces were masked, so that no one, seeing a free and graceful gesture or a pretty face, would feel like something the cat drug in. George was toying with the vague notion that maybe dancers shouldn't be handicapped. But he didn't get very far with it before another noise in his ear radio scattered his thoughts. ”(Kurt Vonnegut, Jr).…

“Classical Fantasy” choreographed by Jerry Opdenaker, restaged and danced by Ciera Fielding, was a beautifully done piece because of it’s nod to classical ballet. The reference to classical ballet was due to both the musical choice of a composed piece lacking lyrics, and purely instrumental, as well as her outfit that consisted of a tutu, her ballet shoes with the boxed toe to allow her to go fully on point, and lastly due to her perfection of the aplomb. In this piece Ms. Fielding used indirect space by taking command of the entire floor as she pirouetted from each space to transition into the next move. While her body was very upright, and she often spun on toe, her sense of weight was light weight. It was almost like she was floating gracefully across the stage, which created a fluid effect to her sudden sense of time.…

In the beginning of this dance piece, I was intrigued by the different tones of colors on the stage and his costume that grasped my attention. During this dance piece, Columbus used strong outward focus, rolling, leaping, turning at a quick pace, and deep breathing phrases. Along with these movements, I was able to grasp onto what I thought the main message was. I believe that the choreographer's intentions were to teach how negative, inconsistent thoughts can control one’s body and the effects of low self-esteem and self-image. One reason I believe this to be the choreographer's intentions was that during Columbus strong outward focus, he tighten his muscles along with his knuckles, and had an angry expression on his face looking towards the…

I attended the St. Ambrose University Dance Company Performance in the Rogalski Center Ballroom on Sunday, April 15th at 2pm. The dance company is a club here at St. Ambrose for students who may not have the time to fully commit to the dance team here at St. Ambrose. However, these individuals all share the love for dancing. Through this club they are able to continue to do so and practice dance without such a big time commitment. Although the time commitment is not as much, these six individuals; Rhett Koterba, Delaney Powers, Meagin Sichterman, Kaylin Sarver, Twyla Pereira and Libby Miller work incredible hard all year long to choreograph these beautiful pieces to perform for events like their showcase in the Rogalski Ballroom.…

The school auditorium is filled with proud parents and the glow of several hundred screens poised to capture the moment their precious stars take the stage. The music starts and a dozen little girls and boys start twirling and craning their necks to watch their dance instructor coach them from the wings. Most of their parents aren't concerned with the dance training their children are receiving. A friend of a friend told them about "Dolly Dinkle's Dance Academy" and so they signed little Susie up,bought her a pink leotard, and told her to have fun at dance class. However, "Dolly Dinkle" is not a qualified dance instructor.…

Some things that could have been better about the piece was really committing to the movement along with the facial expressions. I felt that some people in the dancers were not very confident in the movement that they were doing. Along with the dancing some of them did not commit to the facials. For example if they were to be portraying that they were lost without God they just had a blank look on their face rather than a lost look. Then when they finally found the right path some of them just had an awkward smile on rather than a pleasant uplifting…

You can see the colors of the attire worn by the dancers, the sound of music while the dancers dance, and the love of what they do through their faces, but it is fleeting because dance only happens once. You can never see the same performance twice. It will be different every time, whether it is different dancers on stage or a slight change in the music, but that’s why I like dance because though it is never the same, the emotion you will feel while watching this live art being danced in front of you will forever be the same. The audience should consider itself to be a full member of a dance production because they are what keeps dance performances going.…

On December 2nd, 2016 at the Constance theatre the dance department presented a show called Agbedidi. The show, directed and choreographed by Mohamed DaCosta and Trent D. Williams, Jr., displayed a combination of Traditional African and Contemporary Dance. The house buzzed with excitement as the start of the show approached. It is quite encouraged to see such a large audience at an event, but this audience also brought a positive, vibrant atmosphere for the dancers to soak up. I was curious to see what this year’s performance would look like.…

The formation of dance has lived on this world for many generations as we continue to pass through history. When I went to the wonderful performance at Pierce College I experienced a whole new perspective on dancing. The concert had many types of students performing mixed dance projects of all types like solos and duets. There was an average size of one to eight dancers per project which made it the ideal size for the concert. I really enjoyed the creativity and effort put into this performance.…
