Observation: Mastery Of Biosocial Development

I observed Mia, she is a 2.5-year-old with medium skin tone, short brown hair and brown eyes. Mia exhibits age appropriate mastery of biosocial development as described in chapter 5 pages 156-159 The Developing Person, Stassen 2015. At the beginning of the observation, Mia starts by displaying a variety of gross and fine motor skills. She demonstrates gross motor skills by walking around the room and pushing a baby walker. Mia stepped over toys, and kneeled on the floor to play. She balanced herself on one foot while playing the guitar. She also stood on her tippy toes to get a ball that was out of reach. Her fine motor skills were evident in the ability to open and cap markers and use them to scribble on construction paper. She also opened several jars of paint, dipped the paint brushes in and out and colored on butcher paper. She opened and closed the toy kitchen doors, turned the knobs on the stove, and stirred the play food in the pots. Mia also picked up small plastic balls and put them inside a tea-pot. She spent most of her time playing a guitar, adjusting the straps and playing on the strings. Mia’s language development was undetectable, she only uttered three words during the observation. While playing the guitar she said “oh yeah”. On another occasion, she stopped walking around the play area …show more content…
She did not laugh or smile while playing, nor show fear or anger. However, Mia did stay engage in solitary play during the entire hour. The large number of toys in the room attracted her attention, she went around from toy to toy touching and playing rapidly. When instructed by a person in our group to play with a stacker toy Mia followed directions without presenting fear. She didn’t demonstrate signs of separation anxiety or stranger weariness. She comfortably and confidently played with multiple toys displaying a secure attachment with her
