Observation In Upstate New York City

This project started with an feeling and experience rather than direct idea. Around october i went to the NYC from my dormitory in Upstate New York. On friday night i was supposed to meet a girl that i really wanted to spend some time with but as i found myself sitting underground connected to the subway station wifi waiting for her reply i realised that i'm not getting it. A wave of feelings covered me like a wave covers a surfer. I knew it's normal to be ignored as well as to feel lonely but this time feelings hit so deep that it made me truly realise that we're born alone, we live alone and we die alone.

Over the night loneliness grew around me like a mould, a state which inhibits contact no matter how badly contact is desired. I spent two days riding a subway with a desire to ride away and find a peaceful spot and just wandering around the city with my camcorder capturing scenery that seemed appealing to me and writing down most pure thoughts that came through my head at that time.

Prior starting this project i was using expansive dslr camera and at some point i thought that footage looked almost too realistic. I put it in the storage and took out my dad's old camcorder which records on mini dv tapes. When i saw digitalised footage on my computer i was surprised how raw it looked. It looked much more humanistic, nostalgic and dreamy. It was

Bill Evans “Peace Piece” It's the closest piece of music i could found that represents feeling of loneliness versus being alone. You can hear him play two chords over the whole song while throwing some improvisations from time to time. And that's exactly what it feels like loneliness versus being alone: either being calm and constant or getting all the different feelings and emotions out of nowhere. One time Bill was performing this piece live and one member of audience told him after that it made him feel like standing alone in the middle of

Picture yourself in a desert. You are alone, left to your own thoughts and the sound of the wind blowing in your ears. I can close my eyes and experience this very feeling of lonesomeness and solidarity. Christina's World by Andrew Wyeth causes me to experience these feelings when I am left to myself to study the painting. Upon first look, one is immediately drawn into the girl, laying almost limp on the ground.…

Detaching myself from the world around me to look in as a third party exposed the culture I have been raised into. To complete this assignments I went to Mirror Lake on campus to observe and document the social behaviors I witnessed. I recorded over a two day span. I first sat by the northern side of the lake on the stone fence, to be aloof from what was transpiring in front of me. The second day I sat on the western side on the grass under the trees to get right in the middle of what was happening.…

According to VanderWeele, Hawkley, Thisted & Cacioppo (2012), loneliness can be a debilitating psychological condition characterized by a deep sense of social isolation, emptiness, worthlessness, lack of control and personal threat (as cited in Houghton et al., 2014). There are two distinct types of loneliness which are social loneliness and emotional loneliness. Social loneliness are often correlated with a lack of wider social network whereby it is measured by the quantity of social contact and the size of social network. In contrast, emotional loneliness are often correlated with the loss of loved one such as a partner or close relatives and is measured by the quality of the social connection. According to Squires (2015), people who experiencing…

I was very drawn to and amused by William Deresiewicz’s essay in the Chronicle of Higher Education titled “The End of Solitude.” The main thesis of the story is asking a question about what has prompted our dwindling desire for solitude. Once considered an expression of personal freedom or even a pleasure, just the thought of being alone nowadays is met with anxiety and evasion. I 'm not going to dismiss Deresiewicz as another Luddite technophobe, because his work is more nuanced than that. Instead, I will focus on bit selection, hoping to engage people in a dialogue about the blessings and dangers of the electronic age.…

Some say loneliness is the unhappiness that is often felt when they do not have friends or no one to turn to; some say loneliness is an emotion, but being alone can be a choice. The major thing that took me out of the house was my school, but I also had to walk to school. I had a few classmates drop me off from school, but it was frustrating to ask for a ride all the time when almost everybody in the city had a car. According to German Psychologist Erich Fromm, man is required to rise above his separation within himself and escape the confines of isolation. Throughout time, religion, race and creed, man has been answering the question of loneliness throughout their life, and have always craved to “overcome separateness, how to achieve union, how to transcend one’s own individual life and find atonement”. However, many attempts to fill the void in our heats by our ancestors have failed to do so, as they would sympathize by means of animalistic hierarchy, seek pleasure and reprieve in orgiastic, transitory states such as intercourse and drugs, or by engaging in the creative arts, such as by painting or performing music. The reason for this, Fromm argues,…
