I observed at Nazareth child care center in Jamaica Plain. This is a Catholic charity that has many different locations in many different areas in Massachusetts. The location is set up by age group. There are 3 different classrooms. downstairs (infant, infant toddler, and the toddler room). The Preschool classrooms are upstairs. The preschool is funded through Boston Public Schools and there are 3 different classrooms separated by age. The center is I n a nice neighborhood. It 's middle class mostly, but many children in the daycare have vouchers through the government. The neighborhood has a couple of parks, a community center, and a library right down the street. Overall, the center is in a pretty nice area.

Their circle is about 15 minutes long, but the children are free to roam the room and explore other choices. Even though this is the case, many children engage in circle time because it 's very fun for them. On the QUCCIT scale for language development, there are 4 different items that are rated: caregivers use of vocabulary, use of questions, conversational turn taking, and extending children 's language use. These can all be rated on a scale from 1-7. For this 10 minute observation I would give the caregiver a 4. This month, their theme is transportation. She did an awesome job naming objects for children. Every time she introduced a new mode of transportation, she introduced a new vocabulary word to them such as taxi, ship, boat, truck, train, etc. Even thought some of the kids new what they were, some did not. She also was very descriptive with the objects. Even though her vocabulary wasn 't extremely new to them, she used different descriptive words. She was talking about a fire truck and she used the words long, red, loud, etc. to describe the fire truck. She also used a new word to describe the truck which was ginormous. Something the kids never really hear. I give her a 4 for language because even though she did use some new words and descriptive language, she could 've used richer words and language. I would give her a 5. This is because she asked the children many different kinds of

Caring for children with ages from 2-5 years and because they work only on school term time makes them different from the day nurseries. Although some may argue that beginning school at the age of four is too young, research shows that preschool offers short term social-emotional, and cognitive benefits, as well as other long lasting benefits. Young kids throughout the United States should be required to attend preschool because of these various benefits. When a parent imagines their child’s first day of kindergarten she might think of the fresh new crayons, or the new backpack with matching lunchbox her child already picked out for the occasion. She might imagine the excitement on her child 's face when he bursts into the…

After visiting two local preschools in Strasburg Virginia, I have noticed that children’s education is the main focus, but that can be presented to the children in many ways. The first preschool that I observed at was Pollywog Place on September 26. Pollywog Place is located in Strasburg VA and holds 74 children aging from 6 weeks to 5 years old. Of course with as many children as there are, there is a lot of staff members (21). Pollywog is a state licensed public daycare/preschool facility.…

A safety measure was created by VBP in which a carpool system is authorized; this includes organizing a minimum group of 10 children and 1 adult supervisor who will guide them to school. With large groups of children going to school while supervised by an adult, it not only ensures the children safety but encourages students to attend school daily. VBP has proven to be a huge benefactor to children’s education, since 1999 it has supported over 90,000 families with bicycles and taught 15, 000 new owners’ bike repair skills. In order to ensure the quality of the bikes so children can attend school daily, VBP also provides training for bike repairers; the workshops are free and permit the member to buy the bicycles at 10% of the market price. The aptitudes adapted in the workshop give the new owner the information expected…

Furthermore, the Michigan Department of Education (2002) states, “The most effective forms of parent involvement are those which engage parents in working directly with their children on learning activities at home” (p. 1). My child’s Head Start teacher provided a monthly activity calendar from which I could select as few or as many learning activities as I liked. Most of the activities only took a few minutes and fit easily into our daily routine. Weekly curriculum-related activities were also provided. One week focused on the social-emotional curriculum, one on the language arts curriculum, one on the math curriculum, and the last varied from month to month.…

The definition of socialization is the process by which a human being beginning at infancy acquires the habits, beliefs, and accumulated knowledge of society through education and training for adult status (Webster). The key word is through education—and yes homeschoolers get a fine education, but they do not get the full impact that public or private school children get. Though homeschoolers can join extracurricular activities, there are only twenty-four states that require all public schools to allow homeschoolers to have access to classes and or sports (HSLDA). The states that do not have this law for homeschoolers, the public schools determine whether they will allow it or not—but most do not allow homeschoolers which makes it hard for them to join sports, or different music or art classes. If parents would decide to have them join a class outside of schools, it costs money—especially for music and…

For my service learning, I have been volunteering at a place called Cook Library. Cook Library serves mainly as a library but also has a large after-school-program for kids in the neighborhood and also is a community center where many other organizations utilize their space. The role I play at Cook Library is one of a tutor. I help out with the after-school-program by helping the kids who come with their homework, reading, and supervising any other activities that take place. Cook Library is located in a heavily Hispanic populated neighborhood so almost all of the kids who come to the after-school-program are Hispanic.…

During my practicum experience the teacher had each grade level at different times of the day, starting with kindergarten and finishing with fourth grade. Each grade level she had for 65 minuets per day. If the students behaved well she gave them a 10-minute free time break at the end of their class. During this free time I noticed how students that were in grades k-2 really enjoyed this time and played with each other for the entire 10 minuets. In the other two grades when students were given this free time the boys went and sat at one table as the girls sat at the same table as the teacher and all of the students were a lot less hyper and more focused on the items the teacher had put in their folder for homework.…
