Marketplace Observation

Holstein’s Coffee is my favorite coffee shop in The Dalles. I has a quiet atmosphere that I need to study, but not the stale and stressfulness of a library. I chose Holstein’s because it is a place that I feel comfortable in and a place that I feel I grew up with. Its location is home, and where ever I go, I will always know where the best cup of coffee is served. The atmosphere of Holstein’s is a quiet, yet busy establishment. It has people on their computers hidden in the back corner, employees running to fill orders in the kitchen, and two women chatting out on the patio. The people like me, who are on their computer pay little attention to their surroundings. I feel this is because of the safe cozy feeling Holstein’s cow print chairs and soft leather couch have. I feel that the environment of Holstein’s is strong enough that there are rarely any foul encounters there. I observed that people who came in in couples often consulted each other about their order while waiting in line. I find myself doing the same when I visit Holstein’s because I hardly ever know what I want. A behavior I noticed in the kitchen was that employees seemed to let their guard down as soon as they entered. Employees talked to each other in normal voices about what they needed to be done, or if there was a slow in activity, the spoke to each other about common things like movies and their children. It was hard for me to see any psychological problems is such a calm and safe place for people to exist. In a stress-free environment, people were able to speak with each other freely and not worry about others hearing their conversation, or being judged for it. There was no reason for people to feel that they had to present themselves to other as something that they are not because people in this environment were relaxed and focused on the activity they had in front of
