Personal Narrative: My Observation Of An Individual Child

I chose to observe a young Asian girl who was about five years of age. Her birth date is on June 14, 2011. She was slightly above average height and seemed to be of average weight compared to her classmates. She had long dark brown hair that was pulled back a hot pink headband with a flower on it. She had an identical twin sister that wore the same hot pink dress with white and pink leggings and sparkly pink shoes. The only difference between the two physically was that my child wore leggings that had hearts on them, while her sisters had stripes. This girl was very independent in every activity that she did. She showed a high activity level as she interacted with almost every peer. She expressed her fine motor skill by coloring neatly inside the lines and …show more content…
I also chose her because I thought she was unique due to her having a sister, and she was too cute to not observe. She was also the child that told me where to sit when I first walked into the room.
While observing her, I found that she and her twin sister did not seem to have the same personality and were in different levels of development. Her sister seemed to be a “difficult child”, while she seemed to be outgoing, did what she was told, and cared about others. She showed signs of friendships with multiple students while her sister rarely interacted with her peers. I noticed that my girl was developed at the same rate as her peers, but had an above average cognitive and social ability. Unfortunately, only having on hour to observe my girl only gave me a glimpse of her limitations and strengths. Each child can act differently depending on the day and different events that they encounter. If I wanted more accurate results, I would have to make a longitudinal study on my particular student. I was ten years ago and I can still vividly remember sitting on an old, wooden rocking chair while the words of The Very Hungry Caterpillar trembled off my lips to a room full of second graders. I can recall the eagerness and excitement that filled their little faces as I flipped from page to page. There was an abundance of curiosity and desire to learn in that classroom that made me happy that I decided on skipping recess to read to the younger students. There was a fire that lit in my ten-year-old body that day. That was the day where I finally had an answer to all the “What do you want to be when you grow up?”…

My child observation and classroom observation took place at the Mt. San Jacinto Child Development and Education center in the preschool/pre-k (ages 36 months to 54 months) program room. This classroom has 2 teachers and 15 children in attendance during my observation. My study child is a male student age 4 who for this assignment I will refer to as C. The classroom environment as a whole can handle the children within the program, however I will provide a better picture of the entire room to have a clear picture for reflection. As a child walking into this classroom you feel a sense of warmth of both the environment and also from the teacher as she greats all her children individually.…
