Observation Assignment; Intentional Teachers I observed Butler County Head Start to watch for signs of the teachers demonstrating intentional teaching. Out of the several hours that I observed this class I picked up on several signs that these teachers were making sure to intentionally teach each child. The first instance the teacher demonstrated intentional teaching was with how she made sure each activity engaged the children. As soon as she was ready to start teaching the lesson she made sure she first had all of the children’s attention. Then she started with the first lesson, which was about the number two. She held up a large laminated number two and asked all the children what it was allowing them to engage with her and the rest of …show more content…
It was clear she was there for the sole purpose of educating her students. The first time I saw her taking an opportunity to teach was when a child’s shoe came untied. She didn’t just tie it back quickly and sweep the child off. She, instead, sit down to tie this little guys shoe and started explaining how through a little song. He was learning through her helping him doing something as simple as tying his shoe. Later on in the day it was time for the children to be picked up by their families. All of the kids had left, but one little girl, the teacher came back over to the carpet where she was and begin to let her draw her A’s. She used this free space to teach in. Part of being an intentional teacher is making sure that you are turning everything into a new opportunity to learn. The teacher was sure that when she was reading a story book to the children they were learning from it. She would stop between pages to make sure each child was paying attention and would ask questions about the book as she read. In doing this, she actually got the lesson the book was teaching across to the children. She was purposely reading this book to tie together the day’s lesson. The way she read and made sure the children understood helped them comprehend this lesson taught. Her tone as she read changed with what was happening in the story at that moment, never once did she default to a monotone

Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 I did my observation of Paul Dunbar Middle School. Some of the first things I noticed when I entered the school was how enormous the school’s population is and how the school was mostly Hispanic and African American students. I arrived at the front desk and was asked by the assistant principal what was my preference of classroom. She then proceeded to take me the section of the school where the ESE classes are held. ESE stands for exceptional student education classes.…

Reading is the foundation of everything “Whether you want to be a reading teacher or not you’re going to be one” says Patty Wagenknecht. She was a language arts teacher for 30 years after that she was on the School Board for 12 years. Patty says she was all over the Pettis county school district, at one point she was in charge of going around making sure that all the teachers had everything they needed to teach appropriately. She would go every summer to find some sort of class or seminar to further her education and get up to date information. “You never really have a summer”…

The article talks about how “she” in the past didn’t really think she could teach well. Ut after meeting with a fellow teacher it seems as she has decided to work out of her normal range, to ty and better herself as teacher. “Lasting change in teacher practice is difficult because it expects that teachers challenge and reconstruct deeply embedded practices and beliefs (Borko & Putnam, 1996; Pennington, 2005). For Grace, a third-grade teacher, practitioner research with the Triad Teacher Researchers (TTR) provided a space for her to change beliefs and practices about being a teacher” (Vetter, 2012). Teachers I think can teach if they feel they have the support of fellow administration or teachers.…

In the article, “A New Deal for Teachers,“ by Mathew Miller, he argues that low income families with students from fourth grade through eighth grade show significantly lower tests scores compared to students from high income areas. This problem Miller addresses, is that there are not enough good teachers in poor cities, and not enough teachers willing to continue their jobs as teachers. Another argument Miller indicates is that having a good quality teacher makes a huge difference in the child’s education and overall development. Miller says that teachers, who do not care about their students and their performance, result in students doing poorly in class academics. One way to resolve these problems is to raise the wages for the teachers, but base salary upon performance and educational background.…

Most people imagine a teacher as someone who is in their late 30’s or older teaching in a classroom. Many lessons are taught in the classroom, but many more lessons are taught outside of the classroom. My cousin Keisha and her daughter, KaLeiah, have been the greatest teachers I ever have had in my life. KaLeiah is a three-year old, a tall, lean, energetic little girl with beautiful light brown skin, just like her mother. She has dark black afro hair, and mix of shades of brown eyes, which has filled me with the will to open my heart and mind to the world.…

The class is reading “Woods Runner” by Gary Paulsen. The majority of the time, the teacher will read aloud to the students as they follow along in their own books at their desks. Jim Trelease says, “Reading aloud to children helps them develop and improve literacy skills -- reading, writing, speaking, and listening. And since children listen on a higher level than they read, listening to other readers stimulates growth and understanding of vocabulary and language patterns” (Trelease, 2013).…

“How Teachers Make Children Hate Reading” is a personal memoir of John Holt’s recollections of being an English teacher. Holt remembers the times when he was the teacher that made children dissect books until their minds no longer held the real meaning of them. Their minds were drilled into finding the ‘correct’ answer and moving on as fast as possible. After multiple arguments with his sister telling him his approach to teaching reading was wrong and hurting the children's love for reading, he slowly started to listen. In his memoir, Holt shows growth of being a dynamic character and his ways of teaching change alongside him.…

Although teaching is a field that is extremely rewarding, it also comes with its share of challenges. These challenges can be overcome, however, if the teacher believes in their students ability to learn, and is able to inspire and motivate them. The teacher can accomplish this task through motivating the students through lessons, tests, and a positive classroom environment. If the teacher is fully committed to their student’s best interests, the classroom will ultimately succeed, even if there are challenges along the way.…
