Reflection Paper On Intentional Teaching

Observation Assignment; Intentional Teachers I observed Butler County Head Start to watch for signs of the teachers demonstrating intentional teaching. Out of the several hours that I observed this class I picked up on several signs that these teachers were making sure to intentionally teach each child. The first instance the teacher demonstrated intentional teaching was with how she made sure each activity engaged the children. As soon as she was ready to start teaching the lesson she made sure she first had all of the children’s attention. Then she started with the first lesson, which was about the number two. It was clear she was there for the sole purpose of educating her students. The first time I saw her taking an opportunity to teach was when a child’s shoe came untied. She didn’t just tie it back quickly and sweep the child off. She, instead, sit down to tie this little guys shoe and started explaining how through a little song. He was learning through her helping him doing something as simple as tying his shoe. Later on in the day it was time for the children to be picked up by their families. All of the kids had left, but one little girl, the teacher came back over to the carpet where she was and begin to let her draw her A’s. She used this free space to teach in. Part of being an intentional teacher is making sure that you are turning everything into a new opportunity to learn. The teacher was sure that when she was reading a story book to the children they were learning from it. She would stop between pages to make sure each child was paying attention and would ask questions about the book as she read. In doing this, she actually got the lesson the book was teaching across to the children. She was purposely reading this book to tie together the day’s lesson. The way she read and made sure the children understood helped them comprehend this lesson taught. Her tone as she read changed with what was happening in the story at that moment, never once did she default to a monotone
