The objectivity in journalism helps the audience to make up their mind about a story and decide what they want to believe. In this essay I’ll be discussing how journalists can’t be objective as they will be biased on a personal or professional preference. The definition of objectivity ‘requires that a journalist not be on either side of an argument. They must report only facts and not a personal attitude or view towards the facts or story.’ The idea behind why journalists can’t be objective is because ‘every good journalist is informed about what the subjects they cover and it would be near-impossible to be informed and not have an opinion.’

Every media organisation has their own agenda, BBC for instance commit to ‘fairness and objectivity.’ News stories are not chosen because of their importance, rather chosen based on someone’s decision to which story will get the most views on their website, hopefully leading to more subscriptions and so on. An example is stories from the Middle East other than ISIS involvement or from Asia are less talked about in our media than celebrities from A-Z. They will make the headlines for rumours or some scandalous situation. The more journalists attempt to achieve objectivity the more they lead to bias as to back up their theories or stories they invite ‘experts’ who are industry and political sources or members of elite groups. The postmodern media is of no value as all judgements are based to reach a certain audience. As we live in an age of propaganda, all stories demand for objectivity but leads to bias as the need for source credibility to establish an ‘objective view.’ It is also said to reflect modern society and representations of things like religion, sex, class. An example of this is the Islamophobia representation in the media with major news themes all start with
