Essentially, this quote clarifies that before the revolution majority of Haiti was composed of slaves while the power was in the hands of the minority. Nevertheless, the revolution restructured the society and almost everyone was equal. On the other hand, the echoes of the revolution spread around the world in particular Britain, and most of the countries were asking for equality. This galvanized the slaves to take some steps as the book states, "the actions of slaves themselves hastened the end of slavery.
