Object Essay: The Tympanum of Saint-Lazare, Autun
The Cathedral of Saint-Lazare located in Autun, France is an example of a medieval sculpture during the period of 1120-1135. People who went to visit this cathedral came to learn more about a unique story through images of different texts, such as on the tympanum. The different images that were sculptured on the tympanum tell a unique story about Christ. The tympanum, a vertical, triangular space that forms the centers of a pediment is located on the central portal of the cathedral. In particular, this one displays the depiction of the Last Judgment.
The Last Judgment is the second coming of Christ and the final judgment of God to all humanity,

In the center of the tympanum, Christ is enclosed and enthroned by angels holding him up. Each side of the tympanum splits into two different registers with an architrave underneath. In the portal, Christ's figure shows that he is much larger than the rest of the images, which displays and indicates the use of hieratic scale. The most memorable part of this piece is the sculptor's signature written at the bottom of Christ's feet.
The specific use of fine detail and features from past traditions were prominent and heavily influenced by the Romans, Early Christians, Byzantines, Muslims, and the Celtics during the eleventh and twelfth centuries of Western art during the Romanesque era. The main force behind Romanesque art was the expansion of monasticism. Monasticism is a religious way of life when one dedicates themselves fully to spiritual work. Romanesque art featured many scenes from the Christian faith (MET Museum). There was a Roman influence on the architecture that featured stone-vaulted buildings decorated with wall arcades and architectural sculptures.
Specifically, the churches were large and ornamented with colorful, geometric figures

But, in fact it is actually made up of several open spaces combined altogether to make up the tremendous open spacing that resembles structures from that era. Similar to structures in the past, other structural considerations with this cathedral would be the statues mounted to walls, the Stations of the Cross, relics, crosses, carved figures, and wall imagery which is unique to its display at St Raphael. Other locations of interest that are present at this church is the Sacristry and the Reconciliation Chapel which is placed prominently within the spacious layout and design of the church. Theories have surfaced throughout the years about biblical imagery in early literary works. The works of Sappho challenges biblical imagery considering her work was done way before Jesus was born. She paints imagery that makes readers connect her words to religion. The questions on scholars’ minds are, did this imagery predict Christ or was it a coincidence. In the biblical world, there is no proof of God being a male, there have been theories expressing beliefs that God had famine characteristics.…

Philip McAleer’s “St. Mary’s (1820-1830), Halifaz: An Early Example of the Use of Gothic Revival Forms in Canada” summarizes how the design elements of St. Mary’s allowed the church to transform physically and spiritually, through design elements such as pointed arches. The interior of St. Mary’s is composed of multiple arches that intricately support other design elements, such as crosses and crowns. The exterior design was simple, incorporating proportionated pointed arches and and a single tower. In “Attunement to the Damned of the Conques Tympanum,” Kirk Ambrose examines the Last Judgment tympanum of the Abby church of Saint Foy located in Conques, France. The church was raised approximately in the late 9th or 10th century; additions to the church were also made later. This tympanum has been dated to circa 1125. This year combined with its style places it in the Romanesque period. Much curiosity and debate surrounds the imagery and artists’ intentions because the gestures and facial expressions of the people depicted are not what most people would typically expect of people who ended up in heaven or hell with respect to the last judgement.…

Two perceptions, one meaning Cranach’s Wittenberg Altarpiece The majestic art piece “The Wittenberg Altarpiece” was painted by Lucas Cranach in 1547. This altarpiece is the focal point of the City Church in Wittenberg, on it we can appreciate the importance of how worship was sensed during those days. At the same time, the altarpiece also works as a religious type of publicity since we can identify a clear illustration of the effects of the Reformation on Northern European art. Martin Luther was a key factor during that time and is the reason why we see a portrait of Martin Luther in the altarpiece.…
