The Obesity Epidemic
“Can you believe approximately 17 percent of American children ages 2 to 19 years are obese? How about this fact: approximately 60 percent of overweight children ages 5 to 10 already have at least one risk factor for heart disease? We are all to blame for this - parents, schools, kids - all of us.” -Allison Sweeny.

Obesity is a real problem, causing deaths and sickness all over the world all the time. In recent years, the American obesity epidemic has become a huge problem. Obesity is not the result of genetics, but results from lack of exercise, diet, and poor nutrition. Together with this information, anyone who is obese can benefit from learning about obesity to combat it and live a better healthier life. What is obesity, and is it even a problem? The CDC conducted a survey, the national health and nutrition examination, and the results were astonishing. “the prevalence of obesity was 36.5 percent among US adults during 2011-2014.” (cdc.gov) Nearly one-third of adults in the united states are obese. Children’s obesity is also on the rise. Children aged 2-5 only had an 8.9% obesity rate. (CDC.goc) Kids aged 6-11 years old rate rose to 17.5%. (CDC.gov) Lastly adolescents 12-19 were at 20.5 percent. (CDC.gov) In the 1990’s the level of obesity in adults was at 30.5 percent which was high but to have the rate rise over 7 percent to 37.7 percent is an astonishing amount.
