Obesity in America
I would like to present before you an issue, an issue which applies to our country in particular, the issue of obesity. Obesity is a major issue, in America particularly, as evidenced by the fact that in the US over 35% of men and over 40% of women are overweight versus the 27% of men and 23% of women in Canada which is one of the other countries in the world with high obesity rates (“World Map of Obesity”). Students are taught these and other statistical facts about obesity in school, but most pay no attention to them. Students and adults think that these statistics are a gross exaggeration of what is really true and these numbers that they hear repeatedly will have no impact on their lives. I used to think so as well, until recently when I had the chance to research the topic through medical studies and websites provided by the government and see for myself how big of a problem obesity really is in America. Obesity in America needs to be addressed because of the many affected by it and also the harmful effects it has on a person’s body.
To truly comprehend how prevalent obesity is in America and the negative effects it has on the human body, a person must first understand what obesity truly is and how a person is determined to be obese. Obesity is defined by the Stanford Healthcare Organization as being “a serious, chronic disease that can have a negative effect on many systems in your body”…
