Obesity is one of the most pervasive, chronic diseases due to excess adipose tissue affecting 78.6 million adults and about 17% of the children and adolescents in America. The number of affected individuals has steadily increased since 1960. Obesity disproportionately affects individuals from certain racial/ethnic groups and the socio-economically disadvantaged. Those who are obese, compared to those with a normal or healthy weight, are at an increased risk for many serious diseases and health conditions, including hypertension, dyslipidemia, type 2 diabetes, stroke, some cancers, and mental illness.

Aim for a Healthy Weight – National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute
The National Institutes of Health is behind this initiative and provides education and resources to adults to encourage healthy eating and to be physically active to reach and maintain a healthy weight. These changes will improve overall health and can help prevent and control many diseases.
