There have been many misconceptions regarding what obesity is and how you get or become obese. This is because many people may not know what obesity really is. Just to clear it up, Merriam-Webster defines obesity “a condition characterized by the excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body”. This is basically saying that if you have accumulated more than the recommended amount of body fat, you are overweight. More than 68.8% of the American population is obese. Of that, about 22.9% are children, or anyone under 21. Of that, 17.9% are morbidly obese, meaning that you weigh about 3 or 4 times the recommended weight. Doctors and nurses believe that this will allow for obesity to be treated as a disease. Also, the obesity rates have skyrocketed; 5.6% in 1976-1980, and 10.3% in 200, and finally 17% in 2013. According to the American Obesity Association, 30% of American teens are overweight and 17% are obese. Considering there are almost 200 countries in the world, there were about 43 million children obese in 2013. That’s about 3 times the amount in 1980. Though these government services are designed to help the population, it is actually very burdensome. Those people that are poor or living in poverty, are more likely to become obese, because they fill up on high calorie, high salt,out fatty, and sugary foods. One of the only reasons why poor people are more likely to choose fatty and unhealthy foods, is that the fatty and unhealthy foods, are much less expensive. Going to a good supermarket, may be much harder for someone on limited benefits, because they still have to feed their children for a 30-31 day month. In 1 month, we should have eaten about 90 meals in this time. The average meal costs $12.75. Multiplying that price by the amount of meals in a month, you spend $1,150 a month to feed the family. The average american family is about 4 people. Say the parent or guardian collects Food Stamps or SNAP, they will receive $194 for 1 person, and almost $150 for each additional person. That means the typical family of 4 or more people, only get about $650 to feed the family for the month. I know from personal experience, that the amount of food stamps provided, usually ends up running out, and you have to buy food with cash out of pocket. That usually means taking away from any extra money saved up, or depriving yourself of something you may think is not so
