One of the biggest problems American’s face today is obesity. Could the problem be because people are eating all the wrong foods? David H. Freeman has found that the “whole foods” that have amended so highly for being healthy, may not actually be as good for you as you might think. Obesity is not only a problem because of weight, but can also cause diseases like diabetes and high blood pressure, which is why people are working to find a better diet. In his essay How Junk Food Can End Obesity, he found that, surprisingly, the foods the media has labeled as “junk” are not only cheaper and faster than whole foods, but in some circumstances can be healthier. Freedman’s first example is him going to an eatery in Oberlin, Ohio called Café Sprouts. He states “The result was tasty, but at 300 calories (by my rough calculation) in a 16-ounce cup, it was more than my diet could regularly absorb without consequences, nor was I about to make a habit of $9 shakes, healthy or not.”(506) After waiting several minutes and paying $9, he was impressed with the taste of the drink, but just because it was wholesome did not mean it was not still loaded with calories. After 2 more tries he finally hit the jackpot at none other than McDonald’s. His drink there was quick, cheap, and only 220 calories. Most people would consider their wholesome and expensive smoothie that they get at a café or strictly smoothie shop to be much healthier than a fast food smoothie, but little do they know…
