“Obesity is not a disease but a physical manifestation of a history, our country had with hunger.” Epstein, Ethan. He believes that obesity is a free choice. Recent studies have shown that obesity has become an epidemic in the United States. “More than 65% of people in the United States are obese”, and millions of dollars are being spent on obesity” (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases). Insurance companies would not cover obesity because it was not considered a disease until recently when the Center of Disease Control (C.D.C) made the determination that obesity is a disease. Although obesity is proven to be a lifestyle, genetic, and metabolic it should be classified as a disease because it is not just one factor but a combination of all the above.
Initially, most people would say that obesity is a lifestyle because you have a choice to eat healthy and exercise to avoid being obese. It is true that if people eat more calories than is burned off, they would gain weight. But just how easy is it to change a lifestyle and start to eat healthy and exercise? It is common knowledge that it is costly to eat healthy, and join a gym than to eat fast, quick and easy food. Lower income families are likely to be obese because it is cheaper and easier to buy refined foods, or foods high in sugar and fat, or even just the lack of knowledge of how to eat healthy. It is harder to have access to a fitness gym, that are not located in lower income neighborhoods.…
