In recent years, the problem of obesity has become rampant among the people of the United States. In fact, an alarming number of persons are suffering from obesity today. Specifically, studies have shown that “obese young adults and middle-agers in the U.S. are likely to lose almost a decade of life on average, as compared with their non-obese counterparts. Given our obesity rates, that means Americans who are alive today can collectively expect to sacrifice 1 billion years to obesity” (Freedman Web). These numbers are shocking, and rightly so, since we have countless programs in place to help combat obesity. Moreover, the number of children who are obese are at a shockingly seventeen percent (Schulman 3). So what is being done about this? Moreover, why aren’t the numbers getting better? Research has clearly shown that the number of obese is getting worse, not better. There have been tons of research done, and yet no one seems educated on how to eat healthily and still enjoy the food. There are numerous programs in the U.S. attempting to overcome this increasing issue of obesity, including food labeling and the “Let’s Move” campaign promoted by Michele Obama. The American people need continued education on the health issues of obesity and ways to eat healthy without shaming every person that doesn’t calorie count or that eats fast food because it is simply unrealistic to think that every person can go without processed or fast foods.
