It can seem that all the good foods are bad for your health. These can include desserts, candy, fried foods, and fast foods. By completely cutting out these foods, one will simply crave them more often. So the foods that aren’t as healthy are okay to consume in moderation. American portion sizes have ballooned from what they were. When consuming more food, they are also consuming more calories. Americans are consuming 200 more calories than they did about 20 years ago. That alone can add 20 pounds to one person’s weight (Lambert). By watching the amount of food that is eaten, one can have a healthier diet. One that many find happening is snacking. Many foods that are consumed contain large amounts of salt. A large salt intake increases blood pressure. About 2,300 milligrams is ideal per day, or on Nutrition Facts labels with 20% sodium or less (Health risks). Proteins are needed in small portions to protect kidneys. This can come from chicken, fish, diary, beans, or nuts. Phosphorus protects bones and blood vessels. Some foods that is high in phosphorous are dairy, beans, bran cereals, and oatmeal. Potassium helps nerves and muscles work properly. With very high or low levels, nerves and muscles can work abnormally. Oranges and bananas, brown and wild rice, and potatoes and tomatoes, all are high in potassium. A well-balanced diet is needed to have the body
