Legato, "Obesity is a complex entity that can have many causes; some are endocrine (like thyroid malfunction or hyperfunctioning of the adrenal gland-Cushing 's syndrome) but often the condition is from a combination of inactivity and overeating. For others, there are genetic factors that produce a tendency to overweight even with the consumption of what would be for most people an appropriate number of calories... Whether the causes are hormonal, genetic or reside in the brain (its reward system or the circuitry that underlies habit, perception of portion size, the choice of food, etc.) is often difficult to sort out." Obesity is a preventable factor in other diseases but is not a disease itself. Obesity is a preventable risk factor in many diseases like drinking is to alcoholism and smoking is to lung cancer. Obesity is a determinant in diseases such as type 2 diabetes, stroke, sleep apnea, cancers, high blood pressure, coronary heart disease, high cholesterol, liver and gallbladder diseases, respiratory problems, high levels of triglycerides, increased surgical risk, infertility, reproductive complications, complications during pregnancy and birth defects, and mental health conditions. In 2009, obesity was the third leading cause of premature death in the United States (Obesity.procon.org, 2016). Over 300,000 premature deaths in the U.S. are due to obesity.
