Obesity is complex, on the rise, and has very negative effects on the whole body. Diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease are typically seen in the obese population. As a result, healthcare costs are drastically increased due to extended hospital stays and the need for increased medications.
Substance/prescription abuse is on the rise in the United States. Individuals are turning to medication to aide in dealing with chronic pain, other health issues or dealing with life struggles. Abuse occurs when the medication no longer has positive effects or a tolerance results.

Children are more involved in learning opportunities, when they are rewarded. Schools could utilize a reward program which positively reinforces good nutritional choices and achieving exercise goals. Schools could use Fitbit type technology to create a healthy competitive environment. School children will compete and encourage each other through the technology and engaged direction from teachers and coaches. Bonus rewards could also be given to students that make healthier choices during meals and snack
