Approximately 17 % (or 12.7 million) of children and adolescents aged 9-12 years are obese (division of nutrition). More than one-third (34.9% or 78.6 million) of U.S. adults are obese (division of nutrition). Obesity is one of the leading causes of preventable death in America (division of nutrition), obesity being a disease brings attention to other diseases, it affects the function of the body, comes with mental or emotional health problems, but can also be prevented, is a choice you make, and is a result of over consumption and sedentary life style.

People who are obese have excess fat tissue that causes more production of leptin a regulator of food intake and energy output, which then leads to improper balance of food intake and energy output (office). Obesity can impair normal mobility and range of motion in knees and hips, and obese patients make up 33% of all joint replacement operations (Is obesity a disease). Obesity is also connected to reproductive impairment, contributing to sexual dysfunction in both sexes, infertility and risk of miscarriage in women, and lower sperm counts in men. Obesity rates among children in the U.S. have doubled since 1980 and have tripled for adolescents (office). With the help of parents obesity in children can be prevented with changing a family’s eating habits, being a role model, doing physical activity with the kids, reducing time spent on electronics, keeping the house stocked with healthy food, and switching out unhealthy drinks for water. Adults can prevent obesity by joining a gym, eating 5 or 6 servings of fruits and vegetables, counting calories, going in for regular checkups with the doctor, and gaining a knowledge of portion sizes. Prevention of obesity in children is so necessary because the likelihood of becoming obese adults is thought to increase from about 20 percent to 80 percent by adolescence
