Obesity is referred to as an excess amount of body fat. Although rates of obesity have risen among all ethnic groups; African Americans are affected greatly by this epidemic. “Obesity prevalence in United States adults exceeds 30% with the highest prevalence being among blacks” (Mehari et al,2015, p. 1). Nonetheless, with the implementation of a healthier diet, obesity rates within the African American population can decrease drastically.
People are categorized by healthcare professionals as being either underweight, healthy weight, overweight, or obese. Each category is determined by an individuals’ body mass index (BMI), which is a measurement of body fat in relation to an individuals’ height and weight. According to The US National Health

Most traditional dishes that are prepared within the African American community usually contain high amounts of sugar, fat and salt. Such food choices put allot of strain of our bodies and can cause numerous health complications such as diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure. However, there are some overweight adults who would like to eat healthier, but run into obstacles that keep them from doing so.
Unfortunately, economical strains are strongly correlated to obesity. One out of four African Americans still live in poverty. In low-income neighborhoods there are limited accessibility to healthy foods that are affordable. Therefore, many families turn to the inexpensive option of fast food. Although is it convenience and budget friendly, it can be detrimental to our bodies. Obesity doesn’t stem from just the amount of food we eat, it is also about what we eat. It is the goal of Healthy People 2020 to maintain a healthy body weight and good nutrition. To ensure that an individual gets an adequate amount of nutrition, it is important to consume healthy balanced meals. A balanced meal incorporates foods from every food group such as lean meat, fruits and vegetables. Nonetheless, obesity in black populations can be tackled through various approaches. Once the community is educated on the fact that what we eat is directly related to our weight, and the health consequences are taught; it is then time to implement lifestyle changes that can ultimately save the lives of those struggling with weight issues. For example, for those families who cannot afford healthier food options at their local grocery stores can find alternative stores that sell fresh fruits and vegetables such as a Farmer’s Market. However, for some families the reason behind poor dieting is time. Some people find it difficult to juggle work, school, and personal obligations while still having time left to cook. It is a great idea for these people to prepare their meals in advance to ensure that they eat a balanced meal
