Children in the United States are starting to adopt unhealthy habits from their parents and the millennial generation. Obesity in the United States initiated in the early 2000’s when artificial and processed foods became popular. In fact, there are about five fast food restaurants for every grocery store today in the United States. The fast food industry serves over twenty five percent of working Americans every day. As a result, over one third of the children in the United States are obese and unhealthy. Parents around the United States do not realize that they are the major cause of childhood obesity. In addition, schools are feeding children processed foods which lack the proper nutrition needed throughout the day. Surprisingly, economic development and socioeconomic status are also one of the major causes of obesity in America.
Parents are one of the major causes of child obesity in the United States. In fact, children can become obese prior to birth. A mother 's life choices will affect her unborn child 's health. Obesity during pregnancy puts a plethora of risks on an infant 's life. For example, a woman who is diagnosed with diabetes during her pregnancy has a high chance of spreading it to her child. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, obesity during pregnancy will increase the chances of pregnancy loss, birth defects, and injury during labor (“Obesity and Pregnancy” 1).
