Because of concern over obesity in children the federal government set up guidelines for school meals. Nutrition rules that were adopted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in 2012 include fruits and vegetables, but limit portion sizes. The amount of grains, proteins and calories provided are also are reduced. First Lady Michelle Obama and USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack have worked together to bring changes to school breakfast and lunch programs and set standards in promoting healthy food choices.

Kids should get healthy and nutritious meals at school. Since almost one out of three children in the United States are considered overweight schools need to encourage healthy eating. The Institute of Medicine recommends that school lunches should have more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Sadly, the cost of fresh produce would increase the cost of school lunches. These are fruits, vegetables, grains, proteins and dairy. Healthy eating choices include avoiding foods that are high in fat, sugar and salt and eating the right amount of calories for your age group and size. Being physically active is also important.

Proper food proportions help with good nutrition. A portion is the amount of food that you choose or are given to eat for a meal or snack. It can be big or small. Larger portions mean more calories. Smaller portions have less calories. A serving is a measured amount of food or drink with calories already figured out for you. Different age groups need different amount of calories.

School lunches have calorie guidelines. 650 calories for students in grades K-5. 700 calories for students in grades 6-8. 850 calories for students in grades 9-12. School breakfast has calorie guidelines. 500 calories for students in grades K-5. 550 calories for students in grades 6-8. 600 calories for students in grades
