With obesity and health related problems linked to obesity becoming an increasingly important problem in America, the need to understand fast food culture and its effects has become more relevant more than ever. The restaurant I chose is Chick-fil-A, an American fast food chain that concentrate in chicken sandwiches and other chicken based products. For my ethnography project I visited my Chick-fil-A restaurant inside of my local mall – one of the most popular restaurants in the food court – and sat down for 2 hours observing the customers, taking note of their orders, interviewing them, and actually ordering from the menu for myself as well. The purpose of this ethnography is to address an increase in obesity, hypertension, and Type 2 diabetes in the United States and how the consumption of fast food effects these …show more content…
The most commonly ordered items among adults are chicken strips, the most common items adults get for their children are chicken nuggets, and the commonly ordered sides were waffle fries. The majority of customers ordered value meals (main dish, sides, and a drink) much more often than they ordered individual items. Of those who did order value meals, the majority ordered chicken sandwiches or chicken strips – almost always accompanied by waffle fries and a drink of some sort. Although the choice of drink greatly varied, rarely did anyone choose water and rarely did anyone choose a dessert to go along with their meal or as an individual order.
Although Chick-fil-A has four different salads and three different wraps on the menu no one ordered them. Of the six different sides offered at this restaurant, only one person chose a side that was not waffle potato fries. Even when ordering for children the most common side ordered was waffle fries, even though healthier options like cinnamon apple sauce and fruit cups were
