The Rise of Obesity in Teens the Past Ten Years
Obesity and being overweight in teens was not a critical problem a couple of decades ago. Fast forward to the present time, and within the past ten years, there is a dramatic incline of these statistics, especially in the U.S. There are many causes to be blamed for these ugly trends. The rise of technology in the recent years has caused many teenagers to be drawn away from outside activity, and has drawn them to spend hours upon hours staring at screens. The companies who produce these sugar and calorie-filled foods have one main target, teenagers. These foods are high in sugar, fat, calories, and other unhealthy items which will lead to the teenagers’ bodies storing it if an adequate amount of exercise is not met to burn them off, and ultimately making them become obese or overweight. Although the unhealthy factor of these foods is very high, they like to keep the prices low, making them easier for teenagers to afford. The dramatic incline of obesity in the U.S. has become a major problem and is obviously something that should not be overlooked by anybody.
The first and most likely the most obvious cause in the rise of obesity in teenagers in the past ten years is the rise of technology. The researchers at the Milken Institute in California found a direct link between spikes in adoption of new information and communications technology and the dramatic rise in obesity in 27 countries between 1988 and 2009 (Preidt 1). With this huge rise of technology, this is obviously going to cause teenagers to be drawn into playing the next hit video game, and to lose interest in outside activities, such as sports, exercises, and maybe even going outside in general. Teenagers need to be getting at least an hour of moderate to vigorous physical activity daily. The
