Obesity affecting the Elderly population is sometimes overlooked. We here of obesity in children, adolescents and the adult population, but how focused are we on geriatrics? Disparity of all types exist in the United States. When we think of disparities we think of disparities related to one’s ethnicity of socioeconomic status., secondary to this we then might see a health disparity that might contribute to the cause and effect. However, in my research I have found that obesity in the geriatric population has contributed to other risk factors in health. “It is important to recognize the impact that social determinants have on health outcomes of specific populations. Obesity causes a variety of health problems. These may include problems related to respiratory, reproductive or memory functions. Moreover, it also affects mood and psychology. Risk of some of the major health problems increases due to obesity. These include diabetes, heart diseases and cancer. Bones, hormones and metabolism are also affected adversely due to obesity. Overall obesity decreases length as well as quality of life.

That these patients came to them overweight and all originated from southern states. These facilities have also confirmed that the cost of caring for these individuals are higher due to the need for special equipment and increased staff needed to care for these individuals.
Nutritionists are involved not only for these patients but all who suffer from any disease and cannot do much physical work. Diet plans and lifestyle changes are incorporated in each plan of care.
Social determinants of any specific health issue or condition can be defined as “the social and economic conditions that are influencing the health of the people of the country”. (CDC2014) Genetic influences play an important part in obesity but the sudden increase in obesity in American population cannot be stated as genetic influence. Many social determinants influence the population obesity as stated above, like social class, smoking and eating habits, number of kids and level or degree of urbanization.
