Obesity rates are soaring within the United States, while efforts to modify eating habits have remained unscathed. Studies confirm between “1980 and 2000, obesity rates doubled among adults” and “about sixty million adults, or thirty percent of the adult population, are now obese” (CDC, 2015). Obesity disproportionately affects African Americans compared to all other ethnic groups. In a recent study, the general adult obesity rate is 34.9%. While African American obesity rates is 47.8 %, whites (32.6%) and Latinos (42.5%) (NCHS, 2015). The prevalence of obesity within Americans is a public health concern. Government officials must deal with this intractable challenge by engaging American families in healthy eating habits by increasing awareness …show more content…
Therefore, by targeting those individuals who purchase and prepare most of the food, government officials can develop awareness campaigns. The course Strategic Management of Public Communication course provides a great list of tools to develop public communication campaigns. Firstly, government officials can use agenda setting to create awareness of obesity. Agenda setting allows government officials to leverage obesity as a public health concern and increase visibility. The more the campaign is in the public image the higher the chance of American changing their attitudes. On television, unhealthy foods promote poor eating habits. Therefore, it is a great solution to use that same medium to encourage healthy eating. The same tactics used by the private sector to encourage unhealthy eating government officials can use to encourage healthy eating. The course Strategic Management of Public Communication addresses how to use certain mediums to deliver a message and television is the leading way to address the public. Never before has it been easier to communicate with social networking sites and applications. Americans are able to send tweets, hit the Facebook like button, and see the immediate impact of their message. More than the ability to communicate faster, the technology, which is used, enables Americans to communicate further and efficiently. For government officials, new communication technology means a different approach to media and information. Web technology enables collaboration, but smartphone apps, texting, and email enables instantaneous collaboration. Research shows more than half of the U.S. population owns a smartphone. Therefore, creating mobile communication campaigns will address more people. However, there may be some apprehension. Social media is able to captivate larger audiences faster. However, while it is advantageous to use social media to address large audiences quickly, it is important that the information is accurate because if it is wrong it will become harder to clarify or correct those mistakes. More than the choice of medium is the ROPES process. Government officials must research the audience, identify the objectives, program, develop an evaluation process, and stewardship.
