Obesity has become a major health problem in the United States. The number of people who are obese has continued to rise and is now in epidemic proportions. Along with the number of adults increasing, the number of children who are obese has significantly increased as well. With the increase in obesity, there has been an increase in the number of both adults and children who are developing type 2 diabetes.
Obesity has many causes, some are changeable and some are not. The first possible causes of obesity in the United States is the lack of energy balance where an individual uses fewer calories than what was consumed, this goes along with dining out and eating the larger portions of food or choosing foods that are higher in carbohydrates than what the body needs. A second possible cause is an inactive lifestyle. With people having a more sedentary lifestyle of using a computer, watching television or spending more time on their cell phone they have become much less active. The individual’s environment, such as no convenient grocery stores in walking distance, no sidewalks, along with the healthier foods costing more than the not as healthy foods in the grocery store contributes to an increase in the incidence of obesity. Genetics is another major factor that determines if an individual could become obese. Genetics is one factor that cannot be changed, a good example is if other family members including at least one parent who is obese, then the children have a much higher…
