Poor food choices and lack of self-control are the biggest obstacles for someone trying to live a healthier lifestyle. With busy lives, fast food and quick meals are convenient for people to access at any time. If these food choices are not eaten in moderation, they can lead to rapid weight gain, and a person can quickly become obese. According to Professor Eric Oliver from the University of Chicago, one cannot catch or come down with obesity, and “obesity does not readily meet the criteria of a disease” (Oliver 37.) The FDA reports that 64 percent of Americans are overweight, and 36 percent are obese. These weight categories are determined by calculating one’s Body Mass Index (BMI), which directly correlates with his or her’s height and weight. After calculating a person’s BMI, one can determine if a person is over or underweight. Food can be comforting in times of stress for some people, and those people tend to fall into bad habits that are hard to control. Counseling to find out why people use food for comfort may help find their triggers and help the weight loss process. A person has to mentally and physically be ready to lose weight, or the pounds will just come back time and time again. It is up to the individual to take control of their life and eat in moderation. In recent years, a fat acceptance movement has begun to empower overweight people to begin feeling normal and for them to be treated as a normal size person without shame. The movement promotes body love for all sizes not just those who are overweight. This acceptance can help people feel comfortable in their own bodies and not let someone else determine how they view themselves. This movement helps overweight people come to terms and lose the weight for themselves and not because society looks at them
