The World Health Organization is the health authority within the United Nations. It is responsible for providing leadership, overseeing research, and developing policies related to health worldwide. The World Health Organization accounts that obesity is a growing problem around the world. More than 400 million people are obese, which is what the agency states (Eknoyan). The causes of this crisis are an increase in fatty, sugary foods and decrease in exercise, according to the World Health Organization (Johnson). All this information is very important because being obese is costing way too much money for all the healthcare that is provided. Obesity is one of the biggest drivers of preventable chronic diseases and healthcare costs in the United States. Currently, estimates for these costs range from $147 billion to nearly $210 billion per year. In addition, obesity is associated with job absenteeism, costing approximately $4.3 billion annually and with lower productivity while at work, costing employers $506 per obese worker per year. The healthcare cost for obesity is so expensive, and it’s a waste of money for being obese. Healthy diets and regular, adequate physical activity are major factors in the promotion and maintenance of good health throughout the entire life course. Unhealthy diets and physical inactivity are two of the main risk factors for raised blood pressure, raised blood glucose, abnormal blood lipids, overweight/obesity, and for the major chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and diabetes (Johnson). Overall, 2.7 million deaths are attributable to low fruit and vegetable intake and 1.9 million deaths to physical inactivity and unhealthy diets are major risk factors for chronic diseases.
