Question 1 The Milgram study was done with the objection of finding out whether obedience for from an authoritative figure was a common occurrence, for example, the killing of Jews by Nazis. Therefore, how long were subjects willing to inflict pin on another person when asked to, despite knowing the seriousness of the injuries. From the experiment, the experimenter established routine through the use of the predefined prods such as ‘please go on and please continue (Myers & Twenge, 2017).’ That way the subject would know what to do when they would hear these words.…
In society, more often than not, individuals are expected to uphold a certain appearance and image of themselves; men are supposed to act masculine, while women are pressured to act in a feminine manner. These expectations extend to social class systems as well; the rich and upper middle class families are always expected to accomplish greatness, while lower class families are not believed to achieve anything of value in their lifetime. If these societal values are challenged, the offender will be outcasted from society. Which eventually causes individuals to give up on identity formation and conform to societal expectations. Similarly, Karen Ho and Susan Faludi, authors of “Biographies of Hegemony” and “The Naked Citadel”, discuss the formation…
Conformity is when individuals…
‘We conform because we believe that other’s interpretation of an ambiguous situation is more accurate than ours and will help is choose an appropriate course of action’ (Aronson, et al., 2005). This is an example of Informational social influence theory (ISI) (Muzafer Sherif, 1935), conflicting to this is Normative Influence Theory (NI) (Bibb Latané, 1980). NI is the influence from peer pressure; people can act on NI for a number of reasons. It can be for fear of rejection, a desire for approval or to show…
Chapter 12 talked about “Conformity and Obedience: Yielding to Others.” The book defines conformity when people yield to real or imagined social patterns. After hearing this I couldn’t help but be reminded of the series my church had just completed. The main verse discussed these past 8 weeks is Romans 12:2 “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”…
The movie A Few Good Men provides a perspective with which to view the issues of the defense of obedience to authority when following instructions from superiors. Stanley Milgram, author of “The Perils of Obedience,” and Herbert C. Kelman and V. Lee Hamilton, authors of “The My Lai Massacre: A Military Crime of Obedience,” would likely argue that numerous factors other than intentional sadistic urges could cause a person to unnecessarily inflict violence on another human being. Both articles use psychological methods to examine the reasons a person would knowingly inflict pain on another human. Milgram’s article begins by explaining the dilemma of submission to authority and continues to describe his well-known experiment in its entirety (78-79).…
Conformity is defined by Zimbardo (1992) as, ‘A tendency for people to adopt behavior, values and attitudes of other members of a reference group.’ Mann (1969) identified the two major types of conformity: normative conformity and informational conformity. Normative conformity is caused by a desire to be liked. People conform because they think that other members of their reference group will like and accept them. They also want to avoid embarrassment and humiliation from other group members.…
Conformity is heavily involved with the day to day activities of our lives. Almost everything we do can connect to some form of conformity. Most people do not think about how much social conformity influences their lives. People in a society conform to certain norms or traditions to blend in with everyone else. People do not conform when they are told, they conform due to the fear that they would be an outcast of their society otherwise.…
In this day and age, conformity is what decides who people are and what their future will look like. Normally when people think of conformity, the negative connotations associated with the word come to mind. For instance, teens doing drugs or drinking alcohol because friends or siblings tell them it’s okay to do so. However, I don’t think conformity is always a bad thing, and I first hand experienced the positive effects of conforming.…
The word “conformity” has many negative connotations. It is often thought of as mere mindlessness, or is referred to as “sheep-like.” However, conformity is a useful tool used by people to help them navigate uncertain situations. Conformity, according to Butler and MacManus is the “act of matching attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors to (perceived) group norms” (2000). This can include the way a person acts, dresses, or talks.…
Obedience and Conformity Assessment 1. What actions did Hitler take to solidify his control over the German government? Hitler’s rise to power was a gradual process that led to his control over the German government and position as Fuhrer. As part of the Nazi party, Hitler was appointed chancellor in 1993 by the president after Hindenburg realized that he must appeal to the Nazi Party in order for laws to be passed. Hitler entices the public and a parade is held in his honor.…
Conformity is simply going along with peers, which are individuals of one’s own status who have no special right to direct one’s behavior. There is a scene in the movie where the group decides to go with Bender to his locker. Some of the group members feel like it is a bad idea, but they go along anyway just because everyone else is. There is another scene where Brian brings up the question of what’s going to happen with them on Monday. At that point, they consider themselves friends, but once Monday comes along, they’ll have to deal with the pressure of conforming to their social groups, or deviating away from the norms of their social groups by revealing themselves to be friends with members of a different…
Is Obedience a problem for America? I have read the articles and watched the videos about statism, saying that Americans are basically a herd of cattle following along doing what they are told, and not questioning whether this is the right thing to do. Laws which in this article basically add up to rules put in place by our forefathers. Not questioning if we are truly free.…
War, genocide, and slavery have been common themes throughout American history. In determining why these atrocities have happened and reoccurred, one must consider the roles obedience and disobedience have played in these events. Obedience is the conformance of rules established by an authority figure. On the other hand, disobedience is the refusal to follow the rules established by an authority figure, even when realizing the consequences. In A People 's History of the United States, Howard Zinn states that the most terrible things have occurred in the United States as a result of obedience.…
Sacred values and conformity drives our choice about universe of obligation, by having strong sacred values it allows us to have certain ideas higher in our universe of obligation and conformity makes us want to have the same universe of obligation as everyone else. Sacred values are the biggest driving factor about our universe of obligation, the stronger the sacred value the closer the universe of obligation will be toward yourself. The first example would be the video we watched in class where a member of the Einsatzgruppen shot and killed many Jews. He said he knew it was wrong that he killed those people but he said he hated them so much that he did not care.…
