President Obama & the Syrian Crisis
President Obama had to make some tough choices during his presidency. One of those choices he had to make was how to deal with the Syrian crisis. The Syrian crisis began at the Arab Spring uprising over the Authoritarian Regimes in the Middle East. To suppress the uprisings in Syria Bashar al-Assad used military force to attack the protesters. Obama spoke out about al-Assad’s treatment of the citizens and wanted change, however he didn’t believe that it was his responsibility to get involved. Assad then increased the use of military force, inflicting even more harm on the people of Syria. This caused president Obama to step

This was when Obama finally took a stance publicly on the Syrian crisis. On August 20, 2012 president Obama spoke out at a press conference saying “We have been very clear to the Assad regime that a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized.” In a response to a question regarding his stance on the Syrian civil war. By saying this Obama was proposing to use dominance to suppress Syria’s use of chemical weapons and insinuating that he was going to use military force to do it. This was when his stance switched from liberalism to realism. However he doesn’t hold this stance for long. Assad started using chemical weapons more heavily testing Obama’s stance. In an attempt to help Obama started arming the rebels, however his actions had a lackluster effect on Assad’s regime. The next plan of action Obama was going to take was to ready his own troops to send out into Syria. When Obama searched for allies to back him in his decision and found no one wanting to help. He quickly delayed the plan, suggesting that he should look …show more content…
As conditions worsened for the protesters Obama wanted to help them out in some way however was unable to because of foreign policy. Obama was using a liberalist approach here as well because he was still trying to support peace, however, he was using realist ideas as well because he knew that it was not in America’s self-interest to break foreign policy. When Assad started using chemical weapons Obama threatened the use of military power, but Assad did not back down. In doing so, Obama used a realist approach to the situation because of his threat to military power, but with minimal cooperation from allies the threat was short lived. He then switched back to a liberalist standpoint after Russia convinced Assad to remove the chemical weapons, avoiding war and promoting peace. The real cause of him avoiding war is rather that it is not in America’s interest to go to war and so Obama made it look like he was supporting liberalism views but the root of his decisions were based on realism. Finally once ISIS attacked the U.S. directly President Obama took the path of complete realism using military power to protect his country and to suppress the radical groups showing that Obama based

In the opening pages of their book Mistakes Were Made authors Tavris and Aronson note that politicians conspicuously engage in the art of self-justification (3). Politicians rarely admit mistakes they have made in the past and instead opt to find ways to justify their actions. This often presents cases of dissonance whereby politicians seem to be out of touch with reality.…

Later on in the speech, Obama goes on to justify military action by asking the nation, “What message will we send if a dictator can gas hundreds of children to death... and pay no price” (12). Here Obama implies that if they do not hold Assad accountable, more unthinkable acts like what took place in Syria could happen. He also implies that others who kill children may not be…

In November of 2016, Donald J. Trump was elected president of the United States. A part of Trump’s platform is a hard stance on foreign policy, indicative in his speech on August 15th of 2016, before election; Trump spoke to his supporters about his attitude towards terrorism and the site Politico provided a transcript. Campaigning against Clinton and a staunch opponent of Obama’s administration, Trump believes “the rise of ISIS is the direct result of policy decisions made by President Obama and Secretary Clinton” (politico). Ideally, he would have liked to control the oil to prevent the rise of ISIS, through seizing their funding and keeping U.S. forces on ground to protect the oil (politico). Instead, after the problem arised, Trump wants to join forces with other powers, including Russia, and…

Against the sound advice of the first President of the United States, our Commander in Chief has injected himself in the affairs of other nations and committed our military to battles in which there is currently no victory in sight. Washington stated that, “It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world”. In direct contrast with the sound advice of the Father of our Country, President Obama has forged alliances with foreign nations whose sole purpose is to eradicate the USA and our allies from the face of the earth. The Iran Nuclear Deal enacted by him and five other world powers, was presented to the American people as a means to bring global peace because it would limit Iran’s nuclear program. In reality, it has removed all sanctions against them by releasing their frozen assets and in addition, provided them with the monetary means to expand their nuclear capability to destroy not only Israel, but to assume power over all of the Middle…

Barrack Obama’s speech “Remarks by the President in Address to the Nation Syria” and Vladimir Putin’s op-ed, “A Plea for Caution From Russia”, in September of 2011 address the issue of chemical weapon usage in Syria. Obama’s speech looks at alternative solutions rather than slipping into a War; while Putin’s op-ed was made in reply to Obama’s, he requests a need for complete caution on any decision made. “Remarks by the President in Address to the Nation Syria” is more likely to address a country and the world in a more inviting way over “A Plead for Caution From Russia” due to the diction and control Obama presented in a time of distress. Barack Obama in the speech “Remarks by the President in Address to the Nation Syria” persuades his audience, the United States and the rest of the world, by showing the power he has in the situation…

Every president makes promises while they campaign for the office but once they are sworn into office the act of governing can cause them to lose sight of promises for more important or pressing matter. President Donald Trump made a very ambitious plan for his first 100 days in office. This plan touched on many of the promises that were made during the campaign, proving that the voices of his base had not been forgotten. Many on the left have criticized President Trump for the plan stating that he would be unable to deliver on all of it. And while these concerns many be legitimate it is far more productive to look at what President Trump has accomplished since he has taken office.…

President Obama pushed the envelope even further by not only creatively arguing that the U.S. troops deployed in Pakistan, Yemen, Libya and the attacks on ISIS do not meet the definition of “war” in the War Powers Resolution, but also structuring the Iran nuclear deal bypassing Congress with a signing statement. It is obvious that the President has ignored Congress, relied exclusively on overstepping his executive powers in implementing these foreign policies, and consequently distorted the balance of…
