At the heart of the only planet in our galaxy known to harbor life, lies a land known in the bible as the “Empire of Man”. This land is where the great ark of Noah was built, and not far from there was the fruitful garden of Eden. This area is Babylon, Land of Shinar and Mesopotamia. Not many know the origins of some of these great stories and history of humanity. The current name of this part of the world in which change and chaos is the norm, is Iraq. The name Iraq holds meaning as “country with deep roots”. Culture is defined as the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group. Known as Mesopotamia, civil unrest plagued the empires that inhabited these areas. Beginning with the Sumerians in 5500 BC, this land flourished in the expansion of civilization. Babylonian and Assyrian Empires followed Ancient Samaria. Mesopotamia was conquered by Persian rule and remained for over 200 years until Alexander of Macedon (Greece) in 331 BC. The Romans, Greeks, Parthians, Mongols and Byzantines continued to fight over control until the early 16th century. At this time, the Ottoman Empire took control of what is now present-day Iraq and for nearly 400 years, continued its rule.
Prior to the end of World War I, Great Britain took control of the region and provided great influence under the mandate from 1920 to 1932. During this time, in 1921, the Iraqi Army was established. Iraq was not responsible for neither training its military or establishing its structure, much like post 2004, when the United States created the Iraqi Army. Modernization of Iraq came shortly after and a power struggle for this quickly changing country became the focus.
