Finals Week Reflection

On Friday, December 2nd, I attended the Oasis Lunch and Learn event. It was located in the Oasis room in the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center and the event took place from 12:00-1:00pm. I believe the majority of the people who attended were all in a multicultural club, however they did not make it clear which specific club they were all a part of. Approximately 20 students showed up to the event and the group consisted of students of all different races and backgrounds. I’ll admit I felt a little out of place at first, but as I began talking to a few of the individuals who attended, I felt very welcome and ended up having a great experience. I would describe the atmosphere as relaxed and informal. Though the event was less formal then I had expected it to be, I …show more content…
The speaker had titled her presentation “Finding Power in Finals Week”. From the very first slide I could tell she was incredibly passionate about finding the motivation necessary to help people fight through not only finals week, but also the struggles they face in life. One of the first questions she asked the audience was “Who is your power?” What she meant by that was we need to remember where we came from and use that past to help channel the “never quit” attitude. In my opinion, one of her most powerful points was that the fire inside you has to be bigger and more powerful than the fires that are constantly trying to hinder our successes in life. She then when on to speak about finding the power you need to overcome the stress in which school and life place in our lives and how we can use tools like music and videos to help motivate us to overcome those challenges. Overall, she told us to find a friend who challenges us to be stronger individuals and one who will always be there to motivate us in times of struggle and in

Short Term 12 was a very interesting movie. It had hints of being realistic, but with aspects where you knew it was a movie. It’s about a group of workers who work in a foster care residential facility setting. The main character, Grace, deals with her own personal struggles while she supervises the children at the facility. I have a short bit of experience at a facility like Short Term 12 in some aspects; I can see where parts of the movie are realistic and where are some are an exaggeration because it is a movie.…

After my first two weeks of my junior year, I have discovered that junior year is going to be challenging. I will make critical decisions that will have a major impact on the next five years of my life (and beyond) as I start narrowing down list of colleges and career paths. Junior year will be stressful for me since I'm in multiple extracurricular activities and I'm taking Advanced Placement classes. I am thrilled that I took AP Language and Composition because it is going to prepare me for college and help me become a skillful writer. Lord of the Flies is a fascinating book.…

We are gathered here in honor of a great man, a great father and finally a great husband, his name is Willy Loman. I would like to begin with this poem; “No one can know the potential, of a life that is committed to win; with courage - the challenge it faces, To achieve great success in the end! So, explore the Dimension of Greatness, and believe that the world CAN be won; by a mind that is fully committed, KNOWING the task can be done! Your world has no place for the skeptic, No room for the DOUBTER to stand; to weaken your firm resolution that you CAN EXCEL in this land! We must have VISION TO SEE our potential, And FAITH TO BELIEVE that we can; Then COURAGE TO ACT with conviction, to become what GOD MEANT us to be!…

I attended the Anti Bullying Campaign event and participated in the campaign on Tuesday, September 12. I decided to attend the event, because it is important to spread awareness about bullying and promote peace. For my capstone, I decided to develop a chess game that would allow a user to play against the computer. In the fall of 2015, I researched about how to develop the program and learned about the mathematics beyond developing the AI. After the research, I decided about the features that version one will include.…

Over the course of English 102, I have developed a new set of skills and learned to become a better writer. When I first came into English 102 I struggled with many different concepts of writing. During the semester in English 102, my writing became stronger because I learned how to incorporate evidence into my argument, do more thorough research, have smoother transitions, and have more organization throughout my essay. I learned how to peer review better and to take what others say and incorporate it into my essay. In the beginning, before English 102, I struggled with good organization and flow to an essay, sandwich evidence into paragraphs, and having strong arguments in persuasive essays.…

The Brookings Interfaith Dialogue was a great experience that has furthered my comprehension of multiple religions, as well as introduced me to a brand-new religion (An NRM, to be exact). The evening was filled with short stories, tales and general bits of wisdom from religions like Islam, Christianity, Hinduism and Baha’i since the theme of the night was “Favorite Fables” At first glance, the room appeared very diverse which is something that I was expecting. There seemed to be people of a multitude of skin colors and ethnicities. We were very kindly greeted by a woman of the Hindu faith whose name escapes me, as well as Dr. Fathi Halaweish. Dr. Halaweish even sat and ate dinner with us, questioned us about school and life, as well as the occasional joke – He seems like an awesome guy.…

Reflection for Week Nine During week nine, much of the focus was teaching students how to be problem solvers in preparation of beginning guided math stations and adjusting the procedures and the current methods used for our reading stations. In hopes of making this an exciting responsibility that students eagerly wanted to participate in, I created “Problem Solver” badges for one person in each group to wear during stations. On Monday, students were introduced to the “Problem Solver” badge and one person was chosen to be the group problem solver for the week. As a group we discussed the roles of the problem solver and the characteristics needed to wear the “Problem Solver” badge.…

“Die Welle” is written by Ron Jones,Dennis Gansel and Peter Thorwarth and directed by Dennis Gansel. The movie is about a high school teacher,Rainer (Jürgen Vogel), who is giving autocracy lectures instead of anarchy which he has assigned to give. The ordinary story turns out be a very deep critique of autocracy with his extraordinary teaching method, which I will explain when I go deep into it’s relation with elements of fascism. Students who are sure about Nazi regime could never happen again at first because they think people are more enlightened today, become part of autocracy even without noticing and the Mr. Wenger’s method that he applies in autocracy class , has common point with elements of fascism. I will start with what was written on the blackboard throughout the movie; ‘power through discipline’, ‘power through solidarity’…

Part A: Introduction A note-worthy incident occurred on my placement which took place from the 20th of April- 1st June. My supervising teacher asked for my assistance in marking her year 10 students’ creative writing pieces, as they had just concluded the unit and were sitting their SAC’s when I began my rounds. One of the student’s creative writing pieces appeared to be written from a place of emotional distress and isolation. I believe the piece of writing was deeply personal and written in an autobiographic style, and thus I alerted the supervising teacher to my findings.…
