A couple weeks ago, in Oakland County, there was a boil water advisory due to a water line break. The water line break, had affected not just the people living in that county but also all the business around it.
Many people think that a water break only has a negative impact, but it has a positive side and negative side. In every situation there is a “winner” and “loser.” In the water breakage, the losers are the restaurant chains, the county water department, and the citizens that are in the Oakland County. Water bottle companies will have a higher demand of people wanting to buy water since that’s the only clean water they will get. Many companies in the Oakland County area, want to get portable toilets to help with the sewage problem. The portable toilet companies are in high demand. People are willing to spend money on renting the toilets which is bringing a great deal of money for the companies. The workers who must fix the broken pipes are winners because they are getting paid to fix the pipe.
The drainage system is a public good because it benefits everyone in Oakland country. It does not exclude anyone from using it and many people can use it at once. The sewage is not owned by a private company, but by the government. It supports the whole county and not just one person. The drainage system provides clean water, which is a positive externality for the citizen.
One negative externally from this problem is less people will come into the Oakland County area which means less people will be spending their money there. For instance, 12 Oaks Mall, it draws in people from around Michigan to shop and dine there. With the boil water advisory going on, people would be coming into the city less or not come at all.
