OPUS-1 is a 12-week, phase III, multicenter, randomized, prospective, double-masked, placebo-controlled trial to investigate the efficacy and safety of lifitegrast 5% ophthalmic solution versus placebo twice daily for 84 days. The study was conducted from August 2011 to May 2012 with a total of 588 patients.

Inclusion criteria consist of patients at least 18 years of age with a history of dry eye in both eyes. Exclusion criteria are the use of topical ophthalmic preparations within 72 hours, significant loss of blood within 56 days or history of LASIK surgery 12 months prior to Visit 1. Individuals with eye conditions such as inflammation, glaucoma and/or diabetic retinopathy, or any significant illnesses are also excluded.
