In the short story “Ransom for Red Chief” two men set up a plan that they are going to kidnap a boy named Red Chief, thinking that they will kidnap him, and then when the parents come bagging to get him back, make them pay them. After they kidnap Red Chief, it ends up being a mess and he ends up causing much trouble. In the end, the two men end up giving the parents money to take him back. The author, O. Henry, portrays the theme that taking advantages of a situation can lead to its own problems down the road. Red Chief ends up being a hard kid to deal with and makes lots of trouble, like when he is being annoying asking all sorts of questions. For example, Red Chief keeps spouting many random things, “Rats ate up sixteen of Jimmy Talbot’s aunt’s speckled hen’s eggs…. Does the trees moving make the wind blow? We had five puppies. What makes your nose so red, Hank? … Why are oranges round? Have you got beds to sleep on in this cave? Amos Murray has got six toes…. How many does it take to make twelve?” The men get very annoyed at Red Chief very fast from his excitement and random spouting. Another example of Red Chief being hard to handle is when, he wouldn't let the men sleep. In the text, it shows the men annoyed with Red Chief while they are trying to sleep,”We weren't afraid he'd run away.
