QUESTION ONE:

As I read “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, the words southern, old-fashioned and foreboding came to mind.
We can easily observe the writing style of O’Connor has a lot of Southern influence. For example, O’Connor writes “ain't that the truth?” instead of writing “isn’t that the truth?.”
The Grandma’s constant referral to her younger days also reflects O’Connor’s belief in the more old-fashioned way of doing things. She writes “In my time," said the grandmother, folding her thin veined fingers.” With quotes such as these O’Connor is better able to set the setting for her short story and also let us in on the believes of her characters.
There are many instances where O’Connor hints at death and an accident throughout the story. “In

Many interesting points and ideas are discussed in Flannery O’Connor’s essay “The Element of Suspense in ‘A Good Man is Hard to Find’”. These ideas are not only concurrent with O’Connor’s short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, but they can also be broadened and applied to all aspects of literature. O’Connor’s primary theory; one that I believe is prevalent not only in writing, but in everyday life, states that violence is the only thing capable of bringing a person back to reality, it is the only thing that can strip away somebodies personality, and leave behind only their basic and primal instincts; it leaves behind their true essence. O’Connor goes on to explain that “the man in the violent situation reveals those qualities least dispensable…

Flannery O’Connor is an astounding, but strange modern American writer from Milledgeville that deepens her Christian vision throughout her works. She often engages her personal beliefs into the lives of her characters in her writings. The main characters in “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, “Revelation”, and “Parker’s Back” all portray O’Connor’s belief as a Roman Catholic. All of the characters between the three stories are conceptually related and play similar roles in their particular stories. Hey Snodgrass How are you?…

Flannery O’Connor’s short story “A Good Man is Hard to Find” is a story of hypocrisy and irony. O’Connor’s tale of twisted morals and fleeting grasps at old standards takes a family from an innocent trip to Florida to an impending doom laid out before them by the narrator in the first paragraph. The fill of the story is one based on a grandmother’s traditional ways and the conflicting norms of their modern day society. A dying woman’s last attempt at life initially seems valiant, but the 1955 tale brings to light the error in her entire belief system and the proper foundation The Misfit has built his steadfastly on (SparkNotes). The tale brings to light a remorseless view of the world from two different eyes, a hypocritical grandmother and a…

She had personal knowledge and experience with religious belief and grave illness all exhibited during the story. The Granny in the story represents and symbolizes Porter’s grandmother that grew ill and died before her eyes. Therefore, this is an accurate correlation between the experiences in her real life and the fictional stories she writes. If Dad had a sufficient backlog of work, he hired his own father to assist him; and when each of his sons reached the age of fifteen, he employed us during our breaks from school. By the time Dad engaged my services in the trade, Grandpa’s declining physical capabilities significantly limited his possible work assignments. Although he couldn’t climb or handle heavy lifting, by using a light and compact circular saw, Grandpa could still cut shiplap boards. Frequently, I worked with Grandpa sheathing floors and walls.…

One of the most recognizable elements of Southern Gothic fiction is the grotesque events that shock the reader. These events are easily apparent in A Good Man is Hard to Find because there is much violence that happens so casually without any dramatic effect from the author. For instance, at the beginning of the story O’Connor immediately creates a looming sense of darkness and suspense when the grandmother tries to persuade the family to go to Tennessee rather than Florida because a dangerous inmate has escaped. The grandmother warns her family, “read here what it says he did to these people. Just you read it.…

Mama drove her blue Valiant, rattle-trap car up the U-shaped driveway. There were roses in the arc, red, coral and pink. Roses, not tight-budded roses, but rather old fashioned, having loose and simple petals, resembling Dogwood flowers more than the orderly roses in my mother’s garden. At the top of the drive, stood my Grandparent’s cinderblock, two-story home, our vacation destination. Momma kept her car running, as I along with my two older brothers, Randy and Roger disembarked; suit cases and garbage bag incased pillows in our hands.…
