O Brother, Where Art Thou? (2000), an Academy Award nominee, adventure comedy tale of loyalty, crime, lies, and love. The film written, produced, edited, and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, is a modern loosely based tale on Homer's epic poem, Odyssey. Set in 1930’s Mississippi, during the great depression, this film tells the story of three convicted escapees Ulysses Everett McGill, Pete Hogwallop and Delmar O’Donnel who just so happens to be chained together. Confronted with the possibility of losing his family Everett compile a elaborate lie about buried treasure. While attending a lunch at a Prestigious restaurant Delmar and Everett meet a one eyed, smooth talking sales man, who insisted that they get their meal Togo so they can have a business meeting to discuss further business negotiations. Upon learning that they were bamboozled in to this fake meeting, they are beat to a pulp and robbed by the huge beast we will refer to as the salesmen.
The film even shows you how gullible children can be when they are told something by their mother (Penny Wharvey McGill). The girls where told that their father got hit by a train and died.so when he showed up to see them they were elated to be seeing their father alive and well.
“The only good thing you ever did for the gals was get hit by that train!”
In the scene where Delmar, Everett, Pete and tommy disguised themselves as a band to get into the dinner. The Coen brothers show just how gullible a whole crowd could be. Upon the political candidate realizing that the disguised band were the soggy bottom boys, and how the crowd reacted to the newly famed band, he decided to Pardon all of the members crime, to gain more interest within his campaign votes. The crown cheered on showing participation.
In the end, the three former convicts, are pardon, have developed a bond between each other. Everett won his wife back but with one simple
