"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed - we hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal," were the words once spoken by Martin Luther King Jr. His vision was that one day, “little black boys and little black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.” These notions are being regarded in our everyday lives. He spoke with ethos, pathos and logos- appealing to a variety of cultures.…
Graduating high is a big accomplishment in a students life, but back in the fifty’s and sixty’s it was about more then just graduating. Mya Angelou describes in her article, “Graduation”, how graduation day was like for her back when color mattered. She is excited for the big day and thankful because she “thanked God no matter what evil I had done in my life He allowed me to live to see this day. ”(79)…

Dear [Sponsor] Uniting Distant Stars Scholarship Background: This program started 2011, when one of our co-founders—Heather Cannon-Winkelman-- offered scholarships to two Liberian students. Since 2011 this program has been adding students each year to where we had six during the 2013/2014 school year. This program more than doubled for the 2014/2015 school year when other sponsors joined Heather in providing scholarships to worthy students in Liberia. We currently provide scholarships to students attending three different schools in the Monrovia area.…
I attended the talk with Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. The talk I found to be very enjoyable as it was informational and not boring. I enjoyed listening to her stories about her grandmother. What really hit home to me is the work she does with afterschool programs. Throughout high school, I was very involved, from sports every season to clubs and being a class officer.…

This belief carried onto create a strong community, unique mission, and a Christian based outlook. To follow this speech, the invocation began with speaker Osvaldo Flores, a current student of Berea’s class of 2018. Flores is a first generation undocumented Mexican student and related his struggles to creating a stronger character.…
“The American Dream is still alive out there, and hard work will get you there,” said Bill Rancic. “You don’t necessarily need to have an Ivy League education or to have millions of dollar startup money. It can be done with an idea, hard work and determination”. That quote defines my high school journey. All my life consisted of education, education, and education.…

President Obama recently announced in a speech at Pellissippi State Community College in Knoxville, Tennessee, “Community college should be as free and universal in America as high school is today”. Community college in Tennessee is currently tuition free and saves students $3,800 in annual tuition costs as mentioned in the PBS. In the first year that Tennessee offered the tuition free college 57,000 high school seniors signed up for the programs that include counseling and mentors (PBS). Obama’s tuition free community college plan would increase the amount of students that currently attend college. There would be requirements in place to have your tuition waived; you would have have a minimum of 2.5 GPA and would have to be at least a half-time…
When I was in middle school I was very shy. I would have never called myself a leader back then. However, as I matured and entered high school I began to see my true personality emerge. I went from very shy to social and outgoing. I have taken leadership roles when I can to help further learn about leading people in various groups.…
Commencement speeches are usually given by famous, rich and successful people to inspire graduates to become like them someday, but these speeches are not always effective if the speaker does not reach the audience. Michelle Obama, however, gave a powerful and effective commencement speech at Bowie State University for the class of 2013. Mrs. Obama discussed the educational issues affecting African Americans. The First Lady compelled me to analyze her powerful speech in which she used the appeals of pathos and ethos to tell the students to take action and motivate their communities to value education.…
Most college students can agree that they have one common goal; their goal is to graduate college with their desired degree. Reaching commencement is an honorable achievement. In most ceremonies, honorable people are chosen to give a motivational speech to the aspiring students. Bowie State University’s Commencement speech was given by the United States’ first lady, Michelle Obama. Michelle Obama has a very strong educational past and has earned numerous degrees of her own which makes her a seemly valid candidate to give this speech.…
“Education means emancipation,” according to Frederick Douglass, a writer, abolitionist and a leader to many. In order to inspire those who are lost and without hope of continuing their education, they must be uplifted to illuminate their path with knowledge and excellence. The same determination has been inscribed to many parents of this country and around the world, so they can guide their own children to a better future. Their sacrifices are great ones, especially if their children are first generation college students. For many, education is not only a direction to achieve success, but a form of gratitude to those who have sacrificed many things.…
Greetings, Class of 2023. Today, we get to celebrate the culmination of our thirteen years of hard work in school with graduation, and I have been asked to deliver this year’s commencement speech. I would like to thank all of the people that have brought us here: family members, teachers, principals, and people who would go out of their way to encourage us to keep trying hard even in the midst of failure. Without you, we would not be standing on this stage today. I would like to start by defining the word “commencement.”…
