Dear NYSCLSA Student Board Members and Advisors,
I would like to apply for the position of Student Board Member with the New York State Council on Leadership & Student Activities. I am actively involved within both my school and my community and would love to experience the gains that being a Student Board Member offers.
In November of 2012, I attended my first NYSCLSA conference in Buffalo, New York. I was only eleven at the time, a bit shy, but eager to learn and soak in everything this conference had to offer. That, first and foremost, is my reason for running for the position of a District 10 representative. I want to help plan these conferences so that the next generation of high schoolers walk away feeling as changed as I did four years ago. Moreover, this is a position I have coveted since I was in seventh grade, and I’ve watched the previous District 10 representatives lead, both in and out of the conference centers. They played crucial roles in our community and have inadvertently shown me that it is possible to make a difference. I would like to leave my lasting mark as well, and I feel

A goal I have in mind is bettering myself as a person and a leader. In the same way, I aim to positively affect my community and state by being apart of NYSCLSA and aiding our state charity. We are all inherently imperfect beings and I am certainly no exception. I need to improve on asking for help when I need it and learning to delegate a bit more rather than trying to take on all the responsibilities myself. In addition, I’d like to better articulate my thoughts to create a common vision or goal within a

Communication is of essential importance in any workplace, relationship, and gathering, which creates efficient leadership within a group. Towards the closing of my junior year, I was elected to be one of the few student board members to my school’s National Honor Society. Achieving board member status for this renowned society of students is an eye-opening experience. Adapting to the responsibility that a highly respected board member carries of such a prestigious group truly distinguishes differences between the ordinary member and those who collectively lead the organization. From coordinating induction ceremonies for incoming members, to communicating with local providers for community service events, being a representative of…

Politics was something that was never passed on to me. My mother, a native Cuban who witnessed the Cuban Revolution at a very young age, and my father, the son of a Pennsylvanian blue-collar worker, have never been deeply involved in politics. They never thought, however, that they would have a son who would be engaged in government. Currently, I serve as the chair of the Florida High School Democrats, the official caucus of High School Students at the Florida Democratic Party. I created this organization to increase awareness of government and to combat voter apathy, a recurring theme within the youth community.…

The mission and goals for this event can benefit high school students. However, a big reform must be made in order to reach that goal. Organization is key and if everything is well planned out and was given a lot of effort and thought into it, putting everything at the last minute will not happen. Procrastination should not happen and that spacing everything out will be helpful. Workshops need to be fixed where it gears toward college and is longer than just 10 minutes.…
